Pure Religion

Jam 1:27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

The beautiful, the special, the extraordinary are found in the ordinary if they are to be found at all, and everywhere, over everything done for Jesus sake, no matter how small, there hovers a sense of holiness.

Holiness has to do with the small stuff of life - doing good things in secret and in silence. This is pure religion James says; "To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, [and] to keep himself unspotted from the world."

Quiet unpretentious deeds, done out of the way and in quietness, attack our pride, our hunger for power and prestige, our desire for recognition and approval, our determination to be important. They train us in the practice of humility, which is the essential practice of godliness.

Interesting word, religion. James uses a word that seldom occurs in the New Testament. It refers to the trappings of worship: liturgy, ceremony, and ritual. It is what we think of these days as the 'worship' portion of a church service. To James real worship did not lie in elaborate vestments, or in noble liturgy, or in magnificant music, or in a carefully wrought service: it lay in the practical service of mankind and the purity of ones personal life.

Some religion is "worthless" to use James precise word, in that it has no effect on us at all. It leaves us unchanged. The one who practices that religion "deceives himself" This is a religion that comes of prattling about the Word but not doing it. The Word tries to act upon us, but we will not humbly receive it, and so it makes no imprint upon our souls. That religion says James, is illusory and fanciful because it leaves us unchanged.

Pure religion shows itself in quiet spontaneous acts of love - looking after "orphans and widows in thier distress" caring for the helpless, the mournful, the friendless, the forsaken, the wretched of the earth. It does what most people are unwilling to do. It exaderates what the world neglects. God is on the side of the widow or orphan, perhaps because most people are not.

We can do this when we remember that God is the Father of the downtrodden and disenfranchised, and that includes us. We too have nothing but our wretchesness to bring to God. Only when we remember His pity for us can we speak or act in pity. Then we have a religion that God can accept.

James writes, pure religion is characterized by a determination to "keep oneself being polluted from the world" Thus he introduces the most misunderstood and misapplied concept, "the world"

The Bible says "Love not the world" and who of us can argue with that directive? All good christian people know they should`nt be like the world. But what does it mean to be worldly?

When I was growing up worldliness was smoking, drinking, card playing, gambling, movie going and other scruples. But those proscriptions don`t go deep enough: they dont touch the heart. It`s possible for me to avoid doing any or all of them and still be pulluted.

I can avoid suds and slow dancing and yet harbour rank bitterness and resentment in my soul.
I can kick the smoking habit yet remain selfishly ambitious.
I can go to prayer meetings and Bible studies yet gossip and spread rumors that blight and ruin the lives of my neighbors.
I can avoid the theatre, and all its impurity, and yet play XXX-rated scenarios in my mind and corrupt myself from the inside out.
I can stay away from poolhalls and poker games and get bent our of shape when i`m not pampered and pandered to.

It does`nt add up, and it should`nt. It should`nt because these conventions miss the point. The center of worldliness lies elsewhere - in the cold springs of motives and intentions, in the world`s attitudes that pullute our souls.

Worldliness is being resentful when we`re snubbed or patronized. It is smarting when our contributions are overlooked. It is reacting angrily and defensively to words spoken agianst us. It is growing bitter when another is preferred before us. It is harbouring grudges, nursing grievances, wallowing in self pity. These are the ways we are most pulluted by the world.

God has something better for us. He would have us rid of all grudging, all bitterness in word or thought, all gauging and measuring of ourselves with a different standard from that which we apply to another. He would have no curling of the lip; no indifference to the man whose service we use; no desire to excel another; no contentment at gaining by anothers loss. He would not have us receive the smallest service with ingratitude; would not hear from us a tone that would hurt the heart of another, a word to make it ache, be the ache ever so transient. (George MacDonald)

May God fill every cranny and nook of our being with that religion.

Great post Coconut, it is just that simple and yet man continues to complicate it. Holy Ghost shake us, wake us, and open our eyes.

"With what shall I come before the Lord and bow down before the exalted God? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings; with calves a year old? Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousand rivers of oil? Shall I offer my firstborn for my transgression; the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." (Micah 6:6-8)

Thank you Coconut for sharing this study. It really spoke volumes- wonderfully and truthfully. In today's communities, there are a lot of people who have secluded themselves behind the walls of their homes. I have been living in this town for 16 years now and only know a handful of people.

I can probably guess why that is so but I do know why I do it. It is for the reasons of being hurt and rejected. This should be no excuse anymore. I believe that the Lord is calling us out of our walls to love our neighbours. The church should go beyond their walls and in its communities. Not preaching Christ but loving them to Christ.

God bless you Coconut.

Love,
Snowrose

How true. " the heart is deceitful, above all things, and desperately wicked; who can know it"?

I think this author see`s all too well what James was talking about...

"I've got to let loose or bust! I can't take it any longer. This country (think she means us christians) is so dense in its thinking that it's amazing we are still viable!
We are united in one thing and that is we must share the blame for what we have allowed to happen in this world!

While christians keep their petty differences grasped to their ashen souls like the miser scrooge, and refuse to enter into society even to save it. They sit in their glorified churches concerned only with themselves. Christians are the most biased people on the planet when it comes to sharing themselves.

They love to gather in their church to worship Jesus while they snipe and gossip over who has the best gifts, who can sing best, who makes the best dishes for the pot lucks. Most of their time is spent reviewing what trips each special group is taking, who is in charge of the ice cream social, how to tithe and give more time to the ministry. Oh yes if they get a chance they sing and pray to Jesus, and listen to the pastor tell them how to follow Jesus and be good Christians, as he expounds the Bible.

While the world is going to hell and the thirty percent (70% of americans claim to be christian) of the people are out in society making themselves heard, getting laws passed to keep God out of everything...while Christians sit in their churches "The Silent Majority" - Eileen Waldron

Is it really such a wonder GOD should say: "Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is FAR from me." (empasis mine for all our sakes)

How do we get close to the heart of God? Follow Christ thru the pages of the New Testament, and see whats near and dear to His heart...watch Him walk day by day among the dregs of humanity... loving, healing, feeding, delivering, and planting seeds of faith thru his ministering ...and the condemnation He speaks, is reserved for the religious who sit in their temples saying long prayers and trying to impress God with thier righteousness, and knowledge of Gods law...and it is to these we hear God saying, you dont know how miserable, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked you are in my sight! God sure views things from a whole different perspective than we do!

It BEGS us to ask ourselves the question, how far have I been living from the heart of God? I fear I live most far off as those who do not yet know Him! And I fear even more, some dont know Him because of where I have so blindly been living!

Rev 3:18 I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see. As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

Holy Ghost shake us, wake us, and open our eyes! AMEN!

Time for Talking is Over!

A brief testimony......for several years I was a pastor. I enjoyed pastoring, but after many years of pastoring I realized that just standing in a pulpit talking about pure religion wasn't what it was all about. I was envied as a successful pastor and had all the benefits of being a recognized local pastor in a growing community. But my time was eaten up with running around pushing church programs and playing referee between offended church members.

THEN, the LORD Jesus began to show me new revelations in His Word about James 1:27 and the Sheep and the Goats in Matthew 25.

Wow! I couldn't help but give the rest of my life to practicing PURE RELIGION. I no longer pastor that local church, I left on good terms, and now give my life to James 1:27 and Matthew 25. I no longer have the recognition from man that I used to have, and my deeds are not always in view of the public, and some say I have walked away from ALOT......BUT I AM ENJOYING BEING A CHRISTIAN!

I still teach the Word of GOD wherever the door opens, but more importantly, I am involved in ministering to widows and helping with real needs.

It is such a joy to be a "Pure Religioner". Oh, I'm far from perfect, but I do strive to keep myself "unspotted from the world". (the other part of James 1:27 that is often overlooked)

There are needs all around us, if we'll just look.

Just wanted to share.

I am persuaded that pure religion has much more to offer than clean up, dress up, sit pretty, dont get a spot or a wrinkle on your new garment...which translates, dont cuss, dont drink, dont smoke, dont dance, and make sure you go to church, and pray and read your Bible, allocate 10% to God, and 90% to yourselves, and prepare to fly away on gossamer wings.

How can mans self-centered religion not produce a self-righteous people, who are of little use to God or their fellow man?

Adam and I had the most incredible experience a few weeks ago! We were in the city, and 'happened' to pull into a convience store, and an Indian man by name of White Bear walked up to our car and asked if he could talk to my husband. (witness a meeting that was PURELY GOD here) Adam chatted with him a bit, and then told him we are christians, and asked if he knew Jesus Christ. The man looked a little startled, got tears in his eyes, and said "will you pray for me I am so lost." The ensuing conversation, allowed us to find out this man had many years earlier heard the gospel message, been baptized in the name of Jesus, and without question had experienced the reality of Jesus Christ in the same area (two hours away!) that my brother had spent the remaining years of his life trying to spread the gospel. As it turned out, when he was saying goodbye, he gripped both our hands in his, and right there on the street, prayed the most quiet, humble, powerful prayer I`ve ever heard (from the mouth of a self-confessed sinner) and prayed Gods blessing over us ten fold what we had blessed him by our time spent with him. I will be blessed the rest of my life by that encounter, because as sure as I`m sitting here, Heaven was in attendance at that 'chance' meeting...all glory to God!

Isa 29:13 The Lord said, "These people claim to worship me, but their words are meaningless, and their hearts are somewhere else. Their religion is nothing but human rules and traditions, which they have simply memorized."

Amen!

I'm curious as to how you think, given an America in which, at least to some extent, we have control over our government, we draw the line between acting that pure sort of religion and rendering unto Caesar what is Caesar's?

I`m sorry, i`m sure there was a valid question in there somewheres
...but what does pure religion have to do with paying taxes?

Amen!

Greetings Laudite,

could you please be more specific in what you are saying or asking here?

Thank you and bless you ...><>

Br. Bear

Laudite, I too am confused by your question. However, I am going to risk answering it. I'm sensing that you are saying "What is the role of the church and what is the role of civil government in our lives? I think we all have a general idea of the role of the church. Coconut's citation from James puts it forth very well.

However, in this day and age, handling of the Caesar issue has been blurred by changes in peoples' attitudes. Civil authorities have been appointed by God, whether they know it or not, to preside over governmental units that are established to provide societal organization and protection for all people (the righteous and the unrighteous).

I believe that "rendering unto Caesar what is Caesar's" goes beyond mere payment of taxes. Romans 13:1-7, Titus 3:1, and other NT Scriptures command us to show respect and obedience to public offices and to the people in them. It commands that we respect the police officer when he/she hands a traffic sitation to us. It also demands that we pay the fine. It commands that we act civily toward judges and members of governmental boards and committees even when they don't decide issues in accordance with our views. We are only allowed to disobey when obedience would put us in direct violation of God's law.
