Profile Messages

Here's a novice question - can someone please explain to me how I see or view my messages? It seems I have nine messages, but I have no idea what they are, or how to bring them up. Are these messages someone is trying to send me? Are they linked to my posts or threads? What do messages mean exactly? Please help!

Click on the top right where you see the numbers. You can hover over it and it'll show you who contacted you. Click the link of the message title.

I'm on the Forums page. When I look to the right at my profile, and hover over messages, it shows me the number, but it is grayed out and when I click on it nothing happens. What am I doing wrong?

It's the same with likes and points. I can hover over and see the numbers, but they are also grayed out, and when I click on them nothing happens as well.
