Hi lll3: The Bible has apparrent contradictions in it, but thats all they are, apparrent. The biggest problem with Preterist, is trying to decearn what is a spiritual saying, or a literal saying... (by literal i mean physical meaning). And that is where most of the contradictions come from. Like when Christ says the Kingdom of God cometh not with observation but is in you. This is a spiritual saying, but Daniel and Christ, The book of Revelation, also talked about a visable kingdom of God and a visable New heaven and earth. This will happen at the end when Christ delivers up the Kingdom to God, and God makes all things new.
1Co 15:23 But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming.
1Co 15:24 Then [cometh] the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power.
Here is some of my study, it should be enough to satisfy your curiousity for now.
The seventy sent out...
Luk 10:1 After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come.
Twelve disciples sent out...
Mat 10:1 And when he had called unto [him] his twelve disciples, he gave them power [against] unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.
Mat 10:23 But when they persecute you in this city, flee ye into another: for verily I say unto you, Ye shall not have gone over the cities of Israel, till the Son of man be come.
Answer to the above passages...below.
Till the son of man be come? This is the same as Luk 10:1... Whither he himself would come. Preterist refer to.. Mat 10:23 as the second coming of Christ
Christ was just telling them he would follow them soon.
Now this one...
Luk 9:27 But I tell you of a truth, there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the kingdom of God.
Mat 16:28 Verily I say unto you, There be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom.
Above is their big guns so to speak, Preterist use the above passages of scripture, to say that the kingdom of God will be seen ,or appear, before some of the people Christ is talking to, die, or they refer it to his second coming, which they believe took place in 70AD.
But, what about these passages below
Rom 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Ghost.
Or when Jesus says the kingdom of God comes not with observation, but is within you.
Luk 17:20 And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation:
Luk 17:21 Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.
Luk 11:20 But if I with the finger of God cast out devils, no doubt the kingdom of God is come upon you.
Casting out devils, healing the sick, and raising the dead...is one way a man can see the kingdom of God at work or come, and Jesus did tell his deciples that they also would do great works, because he would be in them...
this is where Preterist get really messed up in there teachings. According to their doctrine, trying to decearn what is a spiritual saying, or a literal saying, is almost impossible to a full Preterist.
But what if Jesus was really talking about his coming, literally, in the above passages. Who would see his coming? according to Christ, it would be some that were standing there. Was not his disciples standing there as well, more than likely. So could he be refering to them? Peter and John and at the tranfigeration seen some things in a vision, did they see more than just Moses and Elijah talking to Christ? According to Peter, he himself appears to be saying he was a witness of the power of Christs coming.
2Pe 1:16 For we have not followed cunningly devised fables, when we made known unto you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of his majesty.
2Pe 1:17 For he received from God the Father honour and glory, when there came such a voice to him from the excellent glory, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.
2Pe 1:18 And this voice which came from heaven we heard, when we were with him in the holy mount.
Joh 1:49 Nathanael answered and saith unto him, Rabbi, thou art the Son of God; thou art the King of Israel.
Joh 1:50 Jesus answered and said unto him, Because I said unto thee, I saw thee under the fig tree, believest thou? thou shalt see greater things than these.
Joh 1:51 And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
Peter seems to be saying he was a witness, not following cunningly devised fables, of his second coming, and the power of it, and made it known to the saints, Nathanael also was told he would see great things, after his introduction to the Lord, that may resemble a second coming of Christ. Angels ascending and decending apon the son of man? when or where did Nathanael see this? So there goes them Preterist big guns, Christ may have shown some of his disciples, his second coming, and the power of it. Hence, explaining why Christ said there be some standing here, which shall not taste of death, till they see the Son of man coming in his kingdom. If this is a literal saying from Christ, of his second coming. Eather way, the Preterist doctrine has more holes in it than a fishermans net. One minute they're telling you the second coming of Christ will be seen (ie: the some standing here will see it Mat 16:28...the next minute they're saying the second coming is not going to be seen (ie: the return of Christ in 70AD.
They really need to make up their minds.
God bless you
