A psalm of David. Praise the LORD, who is my rock. He trains my hands for war and gives my fingers skill for battle. He is my loving ally and my fortress, my tower of safety, my rescuer. He is my shield, and I take refuge in him. He makes the nations submit to me. Psalm 144:1-2 NLT

Many Christians today believe that the life of faith should be easy and without conflict. But that’s not what the Bible teaches. In fact, the apostle Paul enjoined his readers to “put on the full armor of God” as they engaged in spiritual warfare against “the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:11-12).

In the Old Testament and New Testament alike, the writers likened life on this earth for the believer to war. The Bible tells us that we will be at war with our flesh, with the world around us, and with spiritual forces.

Christian man, it really is a war out there! But it’s a war we don’t have to fight alone—even if we could.

In today’s verse, David thanks and praises God for empowering and preparing him for war with his enemies. And our Lord does the same thing today!

Prayer: God in heaven, train my hands for war and my fingers for battle so that I can reap the victory I would never see on my own.
