Of Solomon. Give the king your justice, O God, and your righteousness to the royal son! May he judge your people with righteousness, and your poor with justice! Let the mountains bear prosperity for the people, and the hills, in righteousness! May he defend the cause of the poor of the people, give deliverance to the children of the needy, and crush the oppressor! Psalm 72:1-4 ESV

The writer of Psalm 72 recognized that a just and righteous ruler would bring benefit to everyone in the land, especially the most vulnerable. In fact, he states that the mark of a good ruler is protection of the poor and vulnerable children—those most in need of a champion to look out for them. A ruler committed to doing what’s right and caring for the people who can’t defend themselves will also lead people toward prosperity and peace.

Beyond your own peace and prosperity, your prayers for those in government will bring benefits to the most vulnerable today. The decisions from the lowest to the highest levels of government will have the greatest impact on those who have the fewest resources on hand. Government fails the majority of its people when laws and court rulings favor the wealthiest and most powerful, and that is why your prayers for just rulers matter so much. The peace and well-being of many hang in the balance.

Prayer: Lord, grant my government leaders both the wisdom and righteousness to serve all people with fairness and equality.
