To me prayer is -
- A chat with the one I love.
- an expression of trust in God. When I pray about something I am saying 'I yield to You in this God, I'm not doing this myself, I'm handing it over to You.' Which means I can't just 'ask for what I want' . I will ask for things, for myself and others, but will acknowledge as I do so that I must also submit these things to God's will. That can be hard, and at times I can feel overwhelmed with emotion, but I know that God's plans and purposes are perfect. Prayer is me acknowledging that to Him.
- as an act of obedience- sometimes I don't 'feel' anything, I don't have any sense of God's presence or leading - but I still pray in tongues or English.
- worship. Prayer isn't just 'asking' - its thanksgiving (First) worship, adoration, & praise.
- a simple response of the heart. Sometimes I will have a situation that is distressing me running though my mind and I just pause and pray about it. There often isn't a great deal of thought, its a reaction or response in some way. Often this happens when I wake and have someone or some situation in my mind. Or I see something of the Lord before me, nature, a poor or sickly person.
- honouring God. If we pray rather than attempt to do things in our own strength, then God gets the glory. The answers to prayer in our lives and the lives of others, while they do strengthen our faith - are ultimately to glorify God.
- a two way communication. Not always, certainly, but sometimes when praying I get a 'nudge' in my mind, often something I have to act on. I need to follow this through. (The only problem with this is sometimes if praying for guidance or what course of action to follow in a given situation I'm not always sure if the nudge is from God or my own ideas... in that case I just pray more, hoping He will make things clearer.) God's answer to payer--No, Yes or later.
- a witness to others. Both people actually seeing others praying, hearing, or being told 'I'm praying for you'. or please pray for me.
- an act of fellowship. Praying with someone else can be powerful. (I really should go to prayer meetings more). Meeting together to pray and agree together about lifting things up to God unites and strengthens us.
Those are just a few thoughts on prayer, not organised very well I'm afraid as just off the top of my head.
A prayer partner can be highly recommended.
