Luke 6:35-37

35But love ye your enemies, and do good, and lend, hoping for nothing again; and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil.
36Be ye therefore merciful, as your Father also is merciful.
37Judge not, and ye shall not be judged: condemn not, and ye shall not be condemned: forgive, and ye shall be forgiven:

“Dear God, today I woke up. I am healthy. I am alive. Thank you.” Another interesting couple weeks but in all things I give thanks always. This week, many of us prepare to commemorate the death, crucifixion, burial and resurrection of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Let us now reflect not only on His spectacular gift of sacrificial love, but also the lesson He taught about being merciful and forgiving.

There are times when some of us start believing that “we have arrived”, we are “holier than though”, “no one can touch us” and we have certainly “made it” and “hit the big leagues”. We sometimes forget not only the path that brought us to where we are, but the many persons that helped us along the way; those that were there in times of need and at times when you were surrounded by a sea of naysayers. It may be someone that has constantly given an encouraging word or it may have been someone that blessed you with something that you really needed at that particular time out of the blue. Some of us are so quick to become heady and egotistical and act as if “no one can touch us”. It’s at those moments that God reminds us that when we are powerful, we must also be merciful.

No man is an island and no one person can operate effectively by themselves. We are quick to judge, humiliate, pull down and ridicule. But have you ever taken a second to think, “Hmmm, what would Jesus do?” His example is there to be seen by us all. He was whipped, beaten, tortured, had nails pierced into his hands and feet, hung on a cross, stabbed in his sides, had a crown of thorns placed on his head, abused, humiliated and ridiculed. YET, he still forgave and He showed infinite mercy not only to those that did those things to Him, but also for we that live in present day.

If Jesus could go through all of that and still be humble and still forgive and still grant us new mercies every single day of our lives, the least we could do is learn to love, forgive and show mercy to those we live with, family members, coworkers, church members etc. Why treat someone the opposite of the way that you would wish to be treated? None of us know when we will ever be in need or when our life situation may drastically change. The persons that you constantly hurt now may be the one’s that you may really need tomorrow.

As you reflect this Easter season, do not just merely reflect on Jesus death, burial and resurrection, but reflect and strive to love more, forgive and be merciful.

Have a blessed, safe and prosperous holiday weekend. Live, learn & love….
