Mother's Day is a good time for some hard thinking about the family. For one thing, traditional marriage is under attack. People readily live together. They look down their noses at marriage. They exclaim, "What good is a piece of paper anyway?"

Actually, the wedding ceremony and the piece of paper mean a great deal. They are directly related to the Bible. The Bible reminds husbands how they ought to view their wives. It tells each husband to remember, "she is your companion and your wife by covenant" (Malachi 2:14).

The essence of marriage is a covenant. It is an agreement in which we make binding promises. Marriage is not sexual union. Teenagers may have sex. We call that fornication. Adults may have sex with someone not their spouse. That's not marriage either. It's adultery.

Marriage is a covenant relationship. A man and woman stand before God and among their friends. They exchange vows. They promise each other, before God, they will always be faithful to each other.

This covenant is a covenant of companionship. Husbands and wives promise to be fast friends and good companions. They promise to talk together about the ups and downs of life and to walk together through the good times and the bad times of life. They promise to be companions for life.
