Jesus has overcome the world! ( John 16:33; )
That's the good news.
Unfortunately many of us haven't yet.
We need to weary of being overcome by evil. Rom 12:21;
If we let sin overcome us often enough, we can become a slave to sin. ( 2 Pet 2:19-20; )
The Bible talks about different stages of Christian maturity.
In 1st John 2; John talks about children, young men and fathers. He isn't talking about
physical age here. He is talking about Christian maturity.
One of things that separates the young children from the young men and fathers, is the fact
that they have "overcome".
1 Jn 2:13; I am writing to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one. I have written to you, children, because you know the Father.
1 Jn 2:14; I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who has been from the beginning. I have written to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
Even though Jesus already overcame the world, it's still to us to individually overcome.
We can not overcome evil on our own, it requires faith in Jesus ( 1 Jn 5:4-5; )
But even though we have the ability to overcome sin, sometimes we choose not to.
( 2 Pet 2:22; )
Several times in the book of Revelation, Jesus talks about those who overcome.
Rev 2:7; - they will be allowed to eat of the tree of life.
Rev 2:11; - they will not be hurt by the second death.
Rev 2:17; - they receive heavenly manna, a white stone with a new name written on it.
Rev 2:26; - will be given authority over the nations ( this one has a 2nd condition added )
Rev 3:5; - will be clothed in white garments, and their name will not be erased from the book of life.
Rev 3:12; - will be made a pillar in the temple of God, and they will never leave the temple,
they will have the name of God and the name of the City of God written on them.
Rev 3:21; - will be allowed to sit on the throne with Jesus.
Rev 21:6-7; - will be allowed to drink from the springs of the water of life.. "without cost".
Rev 3:21; He who overcomes, I will grant to him to sit down with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. 22 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’”
He who overcomes.. as I overcame. How did Jesus overcome? By dying. We have to die to self also.
Rev 12:11; is similar... they overcame because of the blood of the Lamb and because of the word of their testimony, and did not love their life even when faced with death.
Do you love your life? So much that you don't want to give it up?
This isn't a one time thing. Jesus said we need to take up our cross daily. ( Luke 9:23; )
We need to deny ourselves daily.
Paul said he died daily ( 1 Cor 15:31; )
Have you overcome today?
