You’ve probably heard it said that when Jesus was on earth, He was wholly God and wholly human. That’s not an easy bit of theology to fully understand, but today’s scripture verse explains why it’s so important—why it is absolutely essential.
Hebrews 2:17 says that there was no other way for God to provide a sacrifice that could be effective in taking away your sins—and the sins of all humankind. In order to be our representative before God, Jesus—God Himself in human form—had to come to earth and live as one of us.
The apostle Paul described this act of eternal, divine love this way: “He [Jesus] made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!” (Philippians 2:7-8).
