Offer to God thanksgiving, And pay your vows to the Most High. Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me." Psalm 50:14-15 NKJV
Luke 17:11-19 tells the wonderful, sad story of Jesus healing ten men afflicted with leprosy, a terrible skin disease.
“Jesus, Master, have pity on us!” they cried out. When they got Jesus’ attention, He told them, “Go, show yourselves to the priests.” Just like that, each man was healed. That’s the wonderful, beautiful part of this account.
Now the sad part.
Jesus had healed ten men that day, but only one of them came back to Him to express his gratitude. He ran to Jesus, praising God as loudly as he could and threw himself at Jesus’ feet (vv. 15-16). The other nine, however, just went on their way, seemingly unaware that they had just been the beneficiaries of an authentic, amazing miracle by God in the flesh Himself.
That one grateful man, now healed and cleansed of a disease that would terribly disfigure him and make him a social outcast, shows us something about the effect of true thankfulness, and it’s this: it draws us closer to God.
Prayer: Father, help me never to forget to “sacrifice thank offerings” to You. Help me to be like that one grateful leper who came back to Jesus to say, “Thank You!”
