Now when Jesus saw that he answered wisely, He said to him, "You are not far from the kingdom of God." But after that no one dared question Him. Mark 12:34 NKJV

The distance between hitting a golf ball onto the green and scoring a hole-in-one may be only a few inches, but the difference is substantial.

When a scribe asked Jesus about the most important commandment, their dialogue was like a golf game: “’The most important one,’ answered Jesus, ‘is this: “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.” The second is this: “Love you’re your neighbor as yourself.” There is no commandment greater than these.’

“’Well said, teacher,’ the man replied. ‘You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices’” (Mark 12:29-33).

The scribe hit his ball onto the green. He knew the answers but lacked a relationship with Jesus. If you know the answers too, but aren’t spending time with Jesus, “not far” might as well be a million miles from the hole.

Prayer: Lord, please close the gap between “not far” and safely home.
