John answered them, saying, "I baptize with water, but there stands One among you whom you do not know. "It is He who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose." John 1:26-27 NKJV
Do you remember how Jesus viewed His relative and forerunner John? The Lord said, “Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist” (Matthew 11:11). Yet in today’s scripture, see how John judged himself: the pinnacle of “those born of women” said he wasn’t worthy of untying Jesus’ shoes.
That’s the attitude God wants in His children. “Humility is the fear of the Lord,” Proverbs 22:4 says; “its wages are riches and honor and life.” “With humility comes wisdom,” Proverbs 11:2 adds, and “humility comes before honor” (Proverbs 18:12). “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit,” the apostle Paul taught. “Rather, in humility value others above yourselves” (Philippians 2:3, all quotations). Encapsulating all, famed Bible teacher Oswald Chambers said, “Humility is the one stamp of a saint.”
No matter how impressive you are, someone is always more so. And even if you happen to be this generation’s John the Baptist, you’re still unworthy of loosening Jesus’ sandals. That’s just fine. Remember, if we don’t come to Jesus as little children, we don’t get into His kingdom (Matthew 18:3).
Prayer: Lord Jesus, my life is all about You. May I always view myself with appropriate humility.
