Don't testify against your neighbors without cause; don't lie about them. Proverbs 24:28 NLT
Have you ever wondered why it’s so easy to talk about other people when they aren’t around? You can say what you think and there’s no one to defend the other person. You could be totally wrong, but when you say what you think, there will probably be someone who takes what you imagine as truth. But when you don’t know if something is true, then you shouldn’t share it as if it is.
Slander is saying something about someone you know is not true, and gosspip is sharing something you’re not sure is true. Both are signs of weakness that show that you didn’t have the boldness to seek the truth before sharing something that could be a lie. Love doesn’t do that.
Being unshakable means always telling the truth. Gossip and slander are not only guesses or lies, but they try to minimize others and elevate the status of the one sharing the stories.
Love puts a blanket over gossip because it is more interested in helping others than pointing out faults that may not even be true.
Prayer: Father, help me to hold my tongue when I’m tempted to speak ill of another person. When I do speak, let my words always be truthful and loving.
