Night and Day - March 06, 2007
God called the light "day," and the darkness he called "night." And there was evening, and there was morning--the first day. Genesis 1:5
We're approaching the spring equinox -- when day and night are of equal length. Each first day of spring we live half in darkness and half in light. We'll enjoy a time of cheerful light by which to see clearly and do what needs to get done. During the other half, we have the darkness for rest, reflection and sleep.
The equinox is a reminder that God has divided our days into light and darkness, each for a purpose in His plan. We enjoy times of sunlight when our path is clear, confidence is high, and activities at their peak. Then darkness descends, forcing us to slow down, review what we have achieved, meditate on the wonders and lessons of the day, and recharge our batteries.
Are you a glass-half-full or glass-half-empty person? I like to wake each morning telling myself that it's going to be a great day. And it usually is. We typically get what we wish for. Whether people aim low or high, they generally hit their target.
I also like to wake each day with a positive attitude that will help me be productive. Each day is a gift, and we're given only so many hours a day to fulfill God's purpose for our lives. And days turn quickly into years. We can choose to procrastinate or get it done. It's amazing that the more we need to do the more we seem able to accomplish. The reverse also can be true. The less we have to do, the less we feel like doing.
Wake up! As the song says, "This is the day that the Lord has made. We will rejoice and be glad in it!" And we can rejoice at this time of year that the days are getting longer.
But God also knows we cannot continue to work ourselves to exhaustion. Even God rested after his work of creating the universe. So he gave us the gift of sleep and the darkness of night to recharge our minds and refresh our bodies. Darkness, too, is a blessing. Evenings are when we typically gather with our families, read, enjoy our individual interests, or plan for the next day. Imagine trying to live in a world undivided by day and night.
God keeps the world spinning in his perfect plan. He divided a time of light for us to be productive and use our talents for His glory and a time of darkness for peaceful slumber. Produce with a positive attitude each day, and you'll sleep peacefully each night - and thank God for each day and night he makes.
