need resources for the old testament

I want to read the Old testament but I just don't understand it. It's mainly the historical aspect of the Bible.

However history never WAS and still IS NOT my strong suit.....struggled with it in school and it doesn't really make sense to me now.

Can anybody give some resources (via the internet and/or books). These books would have to be something I could access via a library. I cannot afford to purchase them, this isn't practical for me and it's not feasible.
