I will send them great trouble--all the things they feared. For when I called, they did not answer. When I spoke, they did not listen. They deliberately sinned before my very eyes and chose to do what they know I despise." Isaiah 66:4 NLT
The Rolling Stones famously sang that you can’t always get what you want. But what if they got it wrong? What if you got exactly what you wanted, but you just wanted the wrong things? Paul expressed this tension between a person’s natural and supernatural desires in Romans 7:15 “I don’t really understand myself, for I want to do what is right, but I don’t do it. Instead, I do what I hate.”
People are naturally selfish. They don’t want to be told what to do. And while God gave humanity guidelines for how to live and thrive, He also gave people the ability to make their own choices.
When people choose selfishly, God gives them the natural consequences of their actions. Injustice isn’t part of God’s character. If you commit a crime, you do the time. God is willing to give you what you want, but He knows that what you need is Him.
Fortunately, God didn’t leave you to your natural inclinations. He gave you the Holy Spirit so you could choose His happiness over your own. When you do, you’ll find that His happiness means your happiness too.
Prayer: Lord, help me choose what You want to give me.
