'You have eyes--can't you see? You have ears--can't you hear?' Don't you remember anything at all? Mark 8:18 NLT

A married couple was packing for a trip when the wife noticed that her husband was unusually quiet. She asked, “What are you thinking?”

“Later,” the husband replied and continued packing.

A half hour into their trip the wife nervously asked her husband, “Are you upset about something? What’s wrong?”

The husband looked confused. “Nothing’s wrong,” he said.

“Earlier, you told me to wait when I asked what you were thinking,” she said.

“No,” he replied. “You asked what I was thinking. I was thinking about our trip, which was happening later in the day.”

Misunderstandings are unfortunately as common today as they were in biblical times. Mark 8:14-21 relates one such misunderstanding.

After the disciples forgot to bring bread with them, Jesus warned them to be wary of the leaven—the yeast that makes bread dough rise—of the Pharisees. The disciples though Jesus was talking about their lack of bread, forgetting His miraculous ability to multiply food.

The disciples should have known Jesus was warning them against the self-centered “leaven” of the religious authorities. They should have listened better.

If you’ve been a believer for a while, it may be tempting to tune out and assume you understand what God wants. But what He wants is for you to keep listening so you understand Him perfectly.

Prayer: Lord, help me listen to understand You perfectly.
