And when Moses was gone into the tabernacle of the congregation to speak with him, then he heard the voice of one speaking unto him from off the mercy seat that [was] upon the ark of testimony, from between the two cherubims: and he spake unto him. Numbers 7:89
God designed by the tabernacle to help the children of Israel understand spiritual truths. Its every detail communicated something that would be fulfilled in Christ once He was raised from the dead. Every color, all the materials, the layout, and all the objects inside spoke of the heavenly realm.
The central object of the tabernacle was the ark of the covenant, which was set inside the most sacred area, the Holy of Holies. Among other things, the ark contained the tablets of stone that Moses had received.
The ark was the promise of God's ongoing presence, and perhaps the most extraordinary thing about it was that the lid was called the "Mercy Seat." It was from the spot that God spoke to Moses. It literally illustrated that a relationship with God "sat" on His mercy.
The Law and animal sacrifices would never provide a spiritual relationship. Trusting in God's mercy was the only way to know Him. Your efforts alone will only end in failure and judgment. But thankfully, "Mercy triumphs over judgment" (James 2:13).
Prayer: Father, I thank You for Your great mercy that allows me to approach You and know You.
