Titus 1:10; For there are many rebellious men, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision,
Titus 1:11; who must be silenced because they are upsetting whole families, teaching things they should not teach for the sake of sordid gain.
Titus 1:12; One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”
Titus 1:13; This testimony is true. For this reason reprove them severely so that they may be sound in the faith,
Titus 1:14; not paying attention to Jewish myths and commandments of men who turn away from the truth.
Titus 1:15; To the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.
Titus 1:16; They profess to know God, but by their deeds they deny Him, being detestable and disobedient and worthless for any good deed.
TalkJesus... probably my favorite website. The good part is we can discuss the Bible with other believers.
The bad part is "we often discuss philosophy and theology more than we discuss the Bible". I live in the United States, where we value "freedom of speech".
I personally do believe in freedom of speech. But the truth is, there are a lot of "empty talkers and deceivers" here. Men who have turned away from the truth.
Men who profess to know God, but by their deeds (and words) they deny Him.
This unfortunately leads to much strife, debates and even arguments. So where do we draw the line? Do we just ignore them? I don't have the power to silence them.
So all that's left is to "reprove them severely". No one likes this option, so do we just give up and let the false teachings and false doctrines continue?
Jude 1:3; Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints.
Jude 1:4; For certain persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
The apostle Jude (Jesus's brother) said he faith "the necessity" to tell the saints to "contend earnestly" for the faith. He warns about "ungodly persons" who have "crept in unnoticed".
Here on TalkJesus they rarely go "unnoticed", but nonetheless, they are here. One of the things these people have in common is they "turn the grace of our God licentiousness".
This is relatively easy for all experienced Christians to see. They tell you grace is a license to sin, God doesn't care how you live. Some of these messages were posted right here on TalkJesus just yesterday.
Jude 1:8; Yet in the same way these men, also by dreaming, defile the flesh, and reject authority, and revile angelic majesties.
It says these men "defile the flesh". They reject authority. Even the authority of the Bible. If you point out scripture that opposes their teachings, they usually get angry and tell you to "mind your own business".
or "stay out of my thread". (so much for freedom of speech).
Jude 1:10; But these men revile the things which they do not understand; and the things which they know by instinct, like unreasoning animals, by these things they are destroyed.
Jude 1:11; Woe to them! For they have gone the way of Cain, and for pay they have rushed headlong into the error of Balaam, and perished in the rebellion of Korah.
Jude 1:12; These are the men who are hidden reefs in your love feasts when they feast with you without fear, caring for themselves; clouds without water, carried along by winds; autumn trees without fruit, doubly dead, uprooted;
Jude 1:13 wild waves of the sea, casting up their own shame like foam; wandering stars, for whom the black darkness has been reserved forever.
Some of these people here on TalkJesus don't even know they are in this group, but others definitely do. They "revile" the part of the Bible that disagrees with their teaching, they don't understand it,
so it doesn't "apply" to them. They are "hidden reefs". Your ship is sailing along smoothly in the will of God.. and all the sudden the rocks beneath waves shipwreck you. ( 1 Tim 1:19; )
Peter says much the same thing.
2Pet 2:1; But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves.
2Pet 2:2; Many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned;
2Pet 2:3; and in their greed they will exploit you with false words; their judgment from long ago is not idle, and their destruction is not asleep.
2Pet 2:12; But these, like unreasoning animals, born as creatures of instinct to be captured and killed, reviling where they have no knowledge, will in the destruction of those creatures also be destroyed,
2Pet 2:13; suffering wrong as the wages of doing wrong. They count it a pleasure to revel in the daytime. They are stains and blemishes, reveling in their deceptions, as they carouse with you,
2Pet 2:14; having eyes full of adultery that never cease from sin, enticing unstable souls, having a heart trained in greed, accursed children;
2Pet 2:15; forsaking the right way, they have gone astray, having followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness.
2Pet 2:19; promising them freedom while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by what a man is overcome, by this he is enslaved.
I can't help but feel a little like Paul in the passage below.
Php 1:15; Some, to be sure, are preaching Christ even from envy and strife, but some also from good will;
Php 1:16; the latter do it out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel;
So, what to do. Give up and let them continue, or continue to...
2Tim 2:23; But refuse foolish and ignorant speculations, knowing that they produce quarrels.
2Tim 2:24; The Lord’s bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, able to teach, patient when wronged,
2Tim 2:25; with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to the knowledge of the truth,
2Tim 2:26; and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, having been held captive by him to do his will.
