Never before had there been a king like Josiah, who turned to the LORD with all his heart and soul and strength, obeying all the laws of Moses. And there has never been a king like him since. 2 Kings 23:25 NLT
After the painful stories of numerous kings who woke up each morning thinking only about how to please themselves, Josiah stepped up to the throne.
His passion for doing the right thing honored God so distinctly that the people around him began to change their morning thoughts from self-love to the love of God and neighbor. He was a man who mattered to the people of God.
Similar commitments stood out in the life of the disciple Barnabas. He was called “a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith” (Acts 11:24 NIV). The result of his actions, like Josiah’s, changed the commitments of his colleagues and neighbors, so that “a great number of people were brought to the Lord.” He was a man who mattered to the church.
Josiah’s and Barnabas’s commitments to change self-love to love for God and neighbor echoes in a psalm they both probably sang: “I will sing praise to the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live” (Psalm 104:33 NIV).
Prayer: Lord, may I wake tomorrow morning determined to love You first and foremost.
