Jesus replied, "Friend, who made me a judge over you to decide such things as that?" Then he said, "Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own." Luke 12:14-15

In a culture where the firstborn son enjoyed immense benefits and privileges, a younger brother pleaded with Jesus for a more equal distribution of the family's inheritance. His argument certainly appears reasonable to us today, but Jesus wasn't looking at this matter from a financial standpoint.

Jesus saw that the younger brother had become obsessed with wealth, allowing greed to determine the value of his life. By refusing to arbitrate a settlement in this family, Jesus may have saved this young man from his desires. Tempting as it is to think that Jesus deprived this young man of something reasonable, Jesus most likely gave him the hard truth that he needed the most.

It's common to treat money as the solution to almost all of your problems today. Even if there's a risk that their desire for money will soon become a never-ending pit of greed and self-indulgence, people rarely treat money as a threat to their spiritual or relational well-being. Jesus didn't mince words in this story, treating greed as a threat that you must always remain aware of. Every time you pray for more money (or "provision"), you should also pray for God's protection from greed.

@Life,
1 Timothy 6:6
But godliness with contentment is great gain.
1 Timothy 6:7
For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.
1 Timothy 6:8
And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

The story coincides with what Jesus teach regarding money itself.
That you can't serve it and God at the same time. Matt 6:24

But how many pastors will tell their congregation to stop working for money ?

But how many pastors will tell their congregation to stop working for money ?

why would they do that?? we should use our money to serve Gods kingdom now, its all Gods money and he lets us be stewards of it. We can not take it with us, yet we can send it ahead by what we do with it now. Money is not bad or good its the love of money that is bad.

Why would they do that?

Well its because that is what Jesus taught

And if one wants to call themselves a follower of Jesus and teach others how to follow him, then they must teach them what he taught .

He taught that you cannot serve God and money. That means working for it. Serve God instead and trust him for food and clothing ...while you share the gospel (what Jesus commands)

Dear Brother @Jakesoulsatstake

I don't believe Jesus said not to work for money. Rather as in most things. The importance we place on things, be it work, money, is what is the problem being discussed. You place this or anything Secondary to God and you have a problem. Also, if you believe for whatever reason that you should have more then what you have been given. That is another problem for people. Just so, even churches and pastors can when discussing money, go above board. Prosperity Gospel is a prime example of putting or better yet, using prosperity as a way of seeing whether one is living in God's will for their life. Either way is wrong, and places the condition of "having or not having" above God. Our God is the provider, but the provisions that we have been given can come by way of a job that pays, and should be seen as a blessing. That we might be allowed to not only take care of our own, but those in need as well.

With the Love of Christ Jesus.

I swing a hammer to drive a nail.
I use a bar to move a rock.
I use a wrench to turn a nut.
I use money to feed the poor.
A tool is a tool is a tool. Money is nothing but a tool which YOU need to feed the poor, to give shelter to the needy....It's total selfishness to say. "I only want my needs met and no more." You have the authority to get wealth so you can support those who do not....But hey! Stay 'righteous' and let them starve.

Christ4ever,

"I don't believe Jesus said not to work for money. "

Ahh but he did, he said it in Matt 6:24 and Luke 16:13

The things you have are being provided by another master , money.
Sell all that you have, give it the poor Luke 12:33
Stop working for money

You can attempt to rationalize it , and say well what he means is....

But realize you are talking about the Son of the Lord God.
I'm pretty confident in him being able to relay a message.

He said stop working for money. Up to everyone whether or not they'll obey.
He also said sell all that you have.
To pray in secret ... so stop praying out loud in front of people Matt 6:5-6
And he taught more

Jesus did not teach that we are supposed to be poor. That would make Him a liar...Its man's teaching that says we have to be poor to be holy.

Its really sad how Christians use Churchianity teachings and ignore the Word. They take a couple verses, out of context, and build a doctrine on it that says what they want it to say....They ignore an entire Bible full of scriptures that say the opposite of their religious nonsense. For example;
Deuteronomy 8:18

But thou shalt remember the Lord thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

For the LORD thy God blesseth thee, as he promised thee: and thou shalt lend unto many nations, but thou shalt not borrow; and thou shalt reign over many nations, but they shall not reign over thee. (Deut. 15:6)

For God delights in the prosperity of His servants. “Let them shout for joy, and be glad, that favour my righteous cause: yea, let them say continually, Let the LORD be magnified, which hath pleasure in the prosperity of his servant.” (Psalm 35:27)
3 John 2 (KJV) 2 Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.

He said that if we first seek the Kingdom of God, everything else, including wealth, riches, abundance, will be added to us. “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matte. 6:33

“And ye shall serve the LORD your God, and he shall bless thy bread, and thy water; and I will take sickness away from the midst of thee.” (Ex 23:25)

The Richest Men – Made Rich BY GOD

Job was the greatest man in all of the east, he had great possessions and riches and yet God’s testimony of Him was that there was none like him, he was perfect and upright before God, he eschewed evil (Job 1:8). And even he was restored back, God restored him double what he had before.
David was one of the wealthiest men in his time, yet he was a man after God’s heart.
Solomon’s disobedience or walk against God did not result from the wealth He had, but his love for women.
Joseph, Jacob’s son, was very wealthy in Egypt and he was made so by God. This was actually God’s plan for him even before he was sold into Egypt. His father, Jacob, was also rich.
We say Abraham’s blessings are ours. Well, Abraham was the richest in his time, he possessed great wealth and was made so by God; and the blessings of Abraham are to those who will receive it.

Joseph of Arimathea, the rich man that took the body of Jesus and buried him was prophesied prior to the event. If God was so particular about the poor, He would have had the poor bury Jesus; but He clearly chose Joseph to show that His plan for wealth and riches is that we can be called on to be a helping hand to someone in need.
Jabez prayed “Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.” (1 Chro 4:10) You cannot have an enlarged coast without influence and affluence in varying degrees. God honored his prayer.
ObedEdom was a man that God blessed/increased with riches and favor when he took the ark of God into his house.

All of these examples clearly show that God will purposely bless (note definition) and increase people who serve Him and walk according to His will. Everyone who walked with God was blessed, increased or transformed for good. God has clearly given us examples in His word (for referencing). We cannot remove from it.

1 Sam. 2:8 – He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth up the beggar from the dunghill, to set them among princes, and to make them inherit the throne of glory: for the pillars of the earth are the LORD’S, and he hath set the world upon them.

The question you should ask yourself is where does He raise and lift them up to? This verse clearly speaks of raising the poor and the needy out of penury and poverty. He lifts them up to sit among princes and to inherit the throne of glory. Among princes and glory is riches, wealth, gold, etc

Psalm 25:13

His soul will abide in prosperity, And his descendants will inherit the land.
Proverbs 28:25

An arrogant man stirs up strife, But he who trusts in the LORD will prosper.
Proverbs 13:21

Adversity pursues sinners, But the righteous will be rewarded with prosperity.
Psalm 1:3

He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither; And in whatever he does, he prospers.
Psalm 37:11

But the humble will inherit the land And will delight themselves in abundant prosperity.
Psalm 68:6

God makes a home for the lonely; He leads out the prisoners into prosperity, Only the rebellious dwell in a parched land.
Psalm 106:5

That I may see the prosperity of Your chosen ones, That I may rejoice in the gladness of Your nation, That I may glory with Your inheritance.
Deuteronomy 29:9

"So keep the words of this covenant to do them, that you may prosper in all that you do.
Psalm 122:6

Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: "May they prosper who love you.
Psalm 128:5

The LORD bless you from Zion, And may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life.
Joshua 1:8

"This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success.
Job 36:11

"If they hear and serve Him, They will end their days in prosperity And their years in pleasures.
Proverbs 11:25

The generous man will be prosperous, And he who waters will himself be watered.
Proverbs 13:4

The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing, But the soul of the diligent is made fat.
Ecclesiastes 7:14

In the day of prosperity be happy, But in the day of adversity consider-- God has made the one as well as the other So that man will not discover anything that will be after him.
Daniel 6:28

So this Daniel enjoyed success in the reign of Darius and in the reign of Cyrus the Persian.
Psalm 122:7

"May peace be within your walls, And prosperity within your palaces."
Deuteronomy 28:11

"The LORD will make you abound in prosperity, in the offspring of your body and in the offspring of your beast and in the produce of your ground, in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers to give you.
Deuteronomy 30:9

"Then the LORD your God will prosper you abundantly in all the work of your hand, in the offspring of your body and in the offspring of your cattle and in the produce of your ground, for the LORD will again rejoice over you for good, just as He rejoiced over your fathers;
Deuteronomy 30:5

"The LORD your God will bring you into the land which your fathers possessed, and you shall possess it; and He will prosper you and multiply you more than your fathers.
Deuteronomy 30:15

"See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, and death and adversity;
Genesis 39:3

Now his master saw that the LORD was with him and how the LORD caused all that he did to prosper in his hand.
1 Samuel 18:14

David was prospering in all his ways for the LORD was with him.
1 Samuel 18:5

So David went out wherever Saul sent him, and prospered; and Saul set him over the men of war. And it was pleasing in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul's servants.
1 Samuel 18:15

When Saul saw that he was prospering greatly, he dreaded him.
2 Kings 18:7

And the LORD was with him; wherever he went he prospered And he rebelled against the king of Assyria and did not serve him.
Judges 17:13

Then Micah said, "Now I know that the LORD will prosper me, seeing I have a Levite as priest."

You will not be able to use any scripture to argue with what Jesus taught and commanded.

Jesus teaches to sell all you have and give it to the poor. Everything

James 2:5
Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him?

Hello Brother,

To keep it simple brother.

And the soldiers likewise demanded of him, saying, And what shall we do? And he said unto them, Do violence to no man, neither accuse [any] falsely; and be content with your wages. Luke 3:14

As a curiosity. I understand wages. However, how do you see violence as meaning here? A necessary component of being a soldier is killing. However, that is not violence being spoken of here is it?

I'm confident in Jesus relaying a message, but I'm not all too fired up about people who use words that are not there to make their claims i.e. "Stop working for money". By the way, in the words I used. Where was I rationalizing?

With the Love of Christ Jesus.

What? God's Word backs up God's Word. You cannot build a doctrine, like the one on poverty vs prosperity, on one single verse taken out of context.

One verse?

Jesus commands in Luke 14:33 He who does not forsake all that he has cannot be his disciple.
If you are forsaking all, where then can one have riches

And Jesus commands to sell what you have and give it to the poor Luke 12:33

Nick,

Just to clear that up, that was John the baptist, not Jesus.

Jesus commands to love our enemies...And yes that also means not killing them as well.

Where our heart is with the Lord is what matters.....

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Matthew 6:24

Matthew 6:24

Indeed , however where is the church teaching to obey Jesus? Where is the pastor that is telling people to quit their jobs and stop working for money.

You won't hear it from them.

Jesus teachings will judge us in the end ... John 12:48

One verse. Look. Context...What is being spoken of? To whom? Why? It all has a bearing on the verse you use. Without that, you do not have a text, you have a pretext (look that up).

Luke 12:24-39 (CJB)

24 Think about the ravens! They neither plant nor harvest, they have neither storerooms nor barns, yet God feeds them. You are worth much more than the birds! 25 Can any of you by worrying add an hour to his life? 26 If you can’t do a little thing like that, why worry about the rest? 27 Think about the wild irises, and how they grow. They neither work nor spin thread; yet, I tell you, not even Shlomo in all his glory was clothed as beautifully as one of these. 28 If this is how God clothes grass, which is alive in the field today and thrown in the oven tomorrow, how much more will he clothe you! What little trust you have!

29 “In other words, don’t strive after what you will eat and what you will drink — don’t be anxious. 30 For all the pagan nations in the world set their hearts on these things. Your Father knows that you need them too. 31 Rather, seek his Kingdom; and these things will be given to you as well. 32 Have no fear, little flock, for your Father has resolved to give you the Kingdom! 33 Sell what you own and do tzedakah — make for yourselves purses that don’t wear out, riches in heaven that never fail, where no burglar comes near, where no moth destroys. 34 For where your wealth is, there your heart will be also.

35 “Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit, 36 like people waiting for their master’s return after a wedding feast; so that when he comes and knocks, they will open the door for him without delay. 37 Happy the slaves whom the master finds alert when he comes! Yes! I tell you he will put on his work clothes, seat them at the table, and come serve them himself! 38 Whether it is late at night or early in the morning, if this is how he finds them, those slaves are happy.

39 “But notice this: no house-owner would let his house be broken into if he knew when the thief was coming.

One verse.

Luke 14:27-35 Complete Jewish Bible (CJB)

27 Whoever does not carry his own execution-stake and come after me cannot be my talmid.

28 “Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Don’t you sit down and estimate the cost, to see if you have enough capital to complete it? 29 If you don’t, then when you have laid the foundation but can’t finish, all the onlookers start making fun of you 30 and say, ‘This is the man who began to build, but couldn’t finish!’

31 “Or again, suppose one king is going out to wage war with another king. Doesn’t he first sit down and consider whether he, with his ten thousand troops, has enough strength to meet the other one, who is coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 If he hasn’t, then while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation to inquire about terms for peace.

33 “So every one of you who doesn’t renounce all that he has cannot be my talmid. 34 Salt is excellent. But if even the salt becomes tasteless, what can be used to season it? 35 It is fit for neither soil nor manure — people throw it out. Those who have ears that can hear, let them hear!”

You use a version that uses the word 'renounce' Not bad....But what does renounce mean? Turn your back on, yup. Stop relying on it? Yup. In context you are being taught to stop relying on wealth and rely on Jesus....Not to burn your money.

Matthew 6:24
Yes! We are blessed...We turn around and be a blessing, then the Lord of our seed gives us more seed to sow, and around again.
The fact of money is...It's like water, If it flows it stays fresh, but if it is dammed up....it rots.

Dear brother I am not here to argue, but I am excited to here your story of selling everything, would you please share it. I say this in Love, people like George Muller and Charles Mully did just that and supply food for thousands of orphans with out. Please give us your real world story. thanks
