As Easter dawns upon us and we celebrate the fact that our redeemer lives and he is risen from the grave, let us not forget what he did for us. Sometimes we hear the word "he died on a cross" so many times that our eyes just glaze over, and we take for granted what he suffered.
Isa 53:2 For He grew up before Him like a tender shoot, And like a root out of parched ground; He has no stately form or majesty That we should look upon Him, Nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him.
In movies, Jesus is often portrayed as a somewhat handsome man, yet from this verse of prophecy, I gather he was probably a very plain looking man.
Isa 53:3 He was despised and forsaken of men, A man of sorrows and acquainted with grief; And like one from whom men hide their face He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.
What a terrible thing to be hated, despised and rejected by those you love. Some people knew who and what he was, and yet they hid their faces from him. I'm sure we've all been there.
Isa 53:4 Surely our griefs He Himself bore, And our sorrows He carried; Yet we ourselves esteemed Him stricken, Smitten of God, and afflicted.
As I have posted before here on TJ, I believe he hurts when we hurt, he is sad when we are sad. - John 11:35 says Jesus wept (for friends who were hurting) Mark 3:5 says Jesus was grieved, because certain people had had hearts against him.
Isa 53:5 But He was pierced through for our transgressions, He was crushed for our iniquities; The chastening for our well-being fell upon Him, And by His scourging we are healed.
His hands pierced by nails, his side pierced by sword. He was beaten. He was whipped. (Mat 27:26) He was betrayed by those closest to him. One sold him for 30 pieces of silver. Another denied even knowing him 3 times in his darkest hour. He was stripped, and mocked and spat upon. A crown of thorns was placed upon his head, and then was beaten on the head. (Mat 27:27-30)
Isa 53:6 All of us like sheep have gone astray, Each of us has turned to his own way; But the LORD has caused the iniquity of us all To fall on Him.
Rom 3:23 says we have all sinned. Every one of us, except Jesus, and yet all of our sin was placed upon him. Unjustly, undeservedly.
2Cor 5:21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Isa 53:7 He was oppressed and He was afflicted, Yet He did not open His mouth; Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, And like a sheep that is silent before its shearers, So He did not open His mouth.
He was tried illegally, and was even found innocent.
Luk 23:4 Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, "I find no guilt in this man."
Isa 53:8 By oppression and judgment He was taken away; And as for His generation, who considered That He was cut off out of the land of the living For the transgression of my people, to whom the stroke was due?
He died for us. Us. Us who the penalty of death was due. He didn't even have to do this. He had the power to prevent it.
Mat 26:53 "Or do you think that I cannot appeal to My Father, and He will at once put at My disposal more than twelve legions of angels?
Mat 26:54 "How then will the Scriptures be fulfilled, which say that it must happen this way?"
Isa 53:9 His grave was assigned with wicked men, Yet He was with a rich man in His death, Because He had done no violence, Nor was there any deceit in His mouth.
Isa 53:10 But the LORD was pleased To crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, And the good pleasure of the LORD will prosper in His hand.
God the father allowed his only son to be tortured and beaten. He allowed him to take on all our sin. Then on the cross, even God the father turned his eyes away from him.
Mat 27:46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, "ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?" that is, "MY GOD, MY GOD, WHY HAVE YOU FORSAKEN ME?"
Isa 53:11 As a result of the anguish of His soul, He will see it and be satisfied; By His knowledge the Righteous One, My Servant, will justify the many, As He will bear their iniquities.
He was our perfect spotless and blameless sacrifice. The atonement for our sins. As the only sinless human, he was the only one who could have done this.
Isa 53:12 Therefore, I will allot Him a portion with the great, And He will divide the booty with the strong; Because He poured out Himself to death, And was numbered with the transgressors; Yet He Himself bore the sin of many, And interceded for the transgressors.
Even nailed to a cross, he had compassion for those who accepted him. (Luk 23:43)
Luk 23:34 But Jesus was saying, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing." And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves.
We as Christians are sometimes accused of worshiping the symbol of the cross. We are sometimes accused of worshiping the acts of the atrocity that put him there. The cross is indeed a symbol, but I do not worship it, I worship someone who hasn't been on that cross for 2000 years!!! I would like to think that I don't worship the acts that put him there, and yet I still commit them.
Easter Sunday is just a few days away, and on that day, as most other days I will celebrate that he is risen. But can we take a few minutes and remember what he went through for us?
