What Does The Bible Say About Masturbation?

"What does the Bible say about masturbation?" is one of our most frequently asked questions. Many Christians have found it difficult to answer this question according to the Bible, because the Bible never mentions masturbation specifically. To understand how God feels about this subject, we must examine other verses that deal with issues such as lust, self-control and purity. Also, we must examine its fruit to see if it is from God. We have tried to address this issue by answering some of the most frequently asked questions. Our prayer is that God will use this page to bring freedom and deliverance.

"Does God care about what we do in the privacy of our bedrooms?"

Sex is God's invention. He is the mastermind behind it—and His creation is worth far more to Him than it is to us. This beautiful expression of love was created out of His own heart, as a gift to be experienced between a husband and wife. It is only in marriage that this manifestation of intimacy can be fully enjoyed in the depth for which it was created.

"Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and the sexually immoral" (Hebrews 13:4, NIV).

"Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge" (Hebrews 13:4, KJV).

The more beautiful and unique something is (like sexual intercourse), the more power it holds over our lives, either for good or bad influence. That is why it so easy for the devil to corrupt the most precious of God's gifts. When we become more in love with the gifts than the One who endowed them, the things that were designed to bless us begin to destroy us instead. Yes, God cares about what we do with our bodies, in public or in private. He doesn't want us to abuse ourselves in any way.

In fact, an older definition of masturbation is "self-abuse." Although more modern dictionaries may no longer carry this definition, they are still linked together under self-abuse:

Self-abuse noun¹

1. Abuse of oneself or one's abilities.
2. Masturbation.

1 Corinthians 6:18 (NIV) further confirms this, saying that unlawful sexual relations defile our own bodies. "Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body."

"Isn't it still better to masturbate than to commit fornication?"

The easy answer to this question would be, "Yes, it is better to masturbate, because at best it corrupts only one person. It certainly is the lesser of two evils." However, why would a loving, holy, all-powerful God abandon you to a situation in which you have to choose any evil, whether it be "lesser" or "greater?" To really answer this question, we must again go back to God's original plan for sex.

First of all, masturbation will not truly relieve the sexual pressure that one may feel. It may for a short moment, but in the long run it only creates a deeper desire and capacity for sex, which will lead to more masturbation. If you let yourself become enslaved to a sexual high, you will find that you need to go to increasingly extreme acts to maintain the same degree of excitement. There are even ungodly sex therapists who recommend masturbation as a way of increasing sexual desire, not lessening it. This creates a vicious circle, like the junkie who craves a "fix," but is only temporarily satisfied. The more he indulges in his dependency, the more ensnared by addiction he becomes. This is the nature of all sin. That is why Jesus declared that all who sin become a slave to sin (John 8:34).

Furthermore, masturbation usually involves fantasy, visualization, and often pornography. The Bible is very clear as to what God expects of us in these areas of fantasy and lust. It teaches that we must not look lustfully at each other and nor should we behave in such a manner as to entice others to lust after us.

"I made a covenant with my eyes not to look with lust upon a girl. I know full well that the Almighty God sends calamity on those who do" (Job 31:1-3, The Living Bible).

"You have heard that it was said, 'Do not commit adultery.' But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart" (Matthew 5:28).

While the above verses refer to men lusting after women, all women know that it can very easily be reversed to apply to themselves as well. Men may be more easily visually stimulated than women, but women can be just as vulnerable to sexual fantasy in the emotional realm. Both are sin in God's eyes, and both can be brought into subjection by controlling our thoughts through Christ's power.

All sexual immorality begins with a thought. A lustful thought not taken captive, will eventually lead to other perversions, because sin reproduces itself in increasingly greater measures. If we do not deal with our evil thoughts, they will take root in our heart.

It is for this reason that God is so concerned with our thought life. Jesus came not only to deliver us from our "outward" sins, but also from wickedness that begins in the heart.

"Isn't God unreasonable to demand sexual purity after giving us sexual drives that seem to overwhelm us at times?"

Our loving God never demands from us what is impossible for us to do. We are so weak within ourselves that it may seem impossible, but He will equip us with His holy power to overcome any sin, if we ask in faith.

Of course, sexual urges in and of themselves are not wicked. They are natural. God created us that way. He desires that we get optimum pleasure out of them by using them the way they were created to be used. However, many desires for physical gratification (whether it be food, sex, etc.) stem from a deeper need that is unfilled deep inside us. Gorging our flesh can never fill a hunger that grows out of our spirit. Only intimacy with God can fill the deepest needs inside of us. No other created thing has that power.

God is no more unreasonable than any caring parent who lovingly disciplines their child. It is only because He knows what is best for us. He sees a mighty potential in each one of us that far supersedes our wildest dreams, and He loves us enough to do all He can to bring it to pass.

"I agree with all the theory, but living it out on a day to day level is another story."

This is the place where we need the empowerment of the Holy Spirit in our everyday lives. The Holy Spirit is not a vague "force," but the very power of God to comfort you and strengthen you against the sins that used to rule you before you were born again. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, we have the very ability that Jesus had to resist temptation. He depended completely upon the Father and so must we.

Something you must know is that God is not the one who is tempting you in this area to "test" you. God is on your side and wants to set you free from these things, not lead you into them! "When tempted, no one should say "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed" (James 1:13-14).

God wants us to overcome every sin and temptation in our lives. Please slowly read the following verses and let their message seep deep inside your spirit.

"No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it" (1 Corinthians 10:13).

"For though we live in the world we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ" (2 Corinthians 10:3-5).

"In the same way count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God, as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to him as instruments of righteousness. For sin shall not be your master for you are not under law but under grace" (Romans 6:11-14).

"For we have not a high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need" (Hebrews 4:15-16, King James Version).

"Since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves from everything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence for God" (2 Corinthians 7:1).

"Can I really be set free?"

"In (this) freedom, Christ has made us free—completely liberated us; stand fast then, and do not be hampered and held ensnared and submit again to a yoke of slavery—which you have once put off " (Galatians 5:1 Amp).

If you are in a real struggle with any form of sexual sin, we do not believe it was by accident that God led you to this teaching. He wants to set you free, starting right now! We would like to share several things that you can do to break loose from this stronghold:

1. Confess this sin first to God, then go to a committed Christian you trust, such as your pastor. Ask God to lead you to someone that you can be accountable with, who will be faithful to pray with you and for you. This will take humility on your part, but it will lead to life. James 5:16 says: "Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective." (You may not feel "righteous" but if you have admitted your sin to God and received His forgiveness, you are! That means your prayers are powerful and effective!)

We found a site that deals with people who have had problems in the past with pornography. Now they hold each other accountable and share what God has done in their lives. If you think such a group may be of help to you, you might want to visit this link. Porn Prayer Support (Christian support group)

2. Flee from and reject anything that aggravates this sin. For example, you may need to get off the Internet for a season or purchase software that blocks out pornography. This may sound too drastic, but it certainly is mild compared to Jesus who said, "If your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body, than for your whole body to go into Hell" (Matthew 5:30). His point was that we must be willing to part with anything that causes us to sin—even if it hurts temporarily.

3. You may need to seek healing and deliverance from qualified Christians who are anointed in this area of ministry. If you have been deeply involved in sexual sins, the devil probably has a stronghold in that area your life. If you can, find some people who can help you stand against the devil, for he is the one who seeks to lead you into temptation, and whispers lies of hopelessness and shame into your ears. If he drops a filthy thought into your mind just when you are trying to pray (he has used this tactic on even the holiest saints of God), tell him to leave in the name of Jesus! Recognize his voice for what it is, and submit yourself to God. As you do this and resist the devil, he will flee from you! He is deathly afraid of those who are submitted to God in brokenness and humility.

4. Don't give up! Deliverance might take time. Self-control takes effort. You may slip occasionally—or even a lot. But remember that God loves you and He will be faithful to perfect His character in you as long you keep submitting to Him. Eventually you will win—and not because of your best efforts, but because of God's mercy (Titus 3:5). Just as salvation is received in faith, so deliverance must be received in faith. This has nothing to do with our character, strength, or failings. The only thing it is dependant upon is you receiving it in humility. If you should fail, recognize it quickly, ask God to forgive you—and then receive His forgiveness! He is faithful to do that which He promised, not just in a select few mighty men and woman of God, but in all who are willing to come humbly before Him. That includes you! We want to encourage you to hold on to this scripture as your anchor:

"May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul, and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful and He will do it" (1 Thessalonians 5:23-24).

If there is anything else we can do to help you, please let us know. In closing, we would like to pray for you:

"Father, we thank you for bringing this person into our website. We know that it was your Holy Spirit that led them here and we thank you for your faithfulness to them! We lift them up to you now and ask that You fill them with a desire for You that transcends every other desire they have ever known. Let them know your cleansing love and power. We thank you that he whom the Son has set free, is free indeed. We speak this freedom into the life of this one whom the devil has bound in shame. We speak healing and deliverance and we break every tie that has kept them under a spirit of addiction and perversion. We stand against the Evil One and his every plan to bring destruction in this one's life. Father, in faith, and by the power and authority You have given us, we declare that this one is FREE in the name of Jesus! We commit them to Your care and we loose Your Holy Spirit to minister to them at this very instant. We ask these things in the precious name of Your son, Jesus Christ."

First time I'm reading this, perfectly outlined.
This will be in my favourites.

There is no excuse to allow this type of behaviour.

This is a very good article...I won't lie, 2 years ago, I struggled with this...and the Lord spoke to me one evening after I had turned from it. I was being tempted to start doing it again, and during the "battle" in my mind, the Lord just said..."Serve ME." SO simple, yet so perfect and powerful. Never again will I do this.
Thank you for sharing this! God bless you!

i am struggling with this right now and it makes me feel so guilty sometimes because i know i'm a nasty person. you are right when you say that it only enhances your sexual desires becuase it often makes me feel like i need to be with a man. i know it is so wrong and i can go a couple of weeks without doing it when im really busy and tired but there is always something that seems to trigger it. i could go into a lot more detail and i really want to to get it off of my chest cuz i can't talk to anyone about this but i don't feel this is the place to do that. i just pray that i can overcome this addiction and not be so enslaved by it.

point to ponder

I have been a Christian for a long time and have always known that theoretically, masturbation is wrong...but I have to admit that since I've been married I've thought there were times that it was ok as long as it was sexual activity with my husband that I was fantasizing about and no "manipulatives" or pornography were involved. When you're married and have kids and your husband works 18 hour days seven days a week...there can be long periods between moments of intimacy...and women have urges and desires just like men do, and need release from sexual tension...so if your husband is not available and he is what you want...what do you recommend doing to satiate the desires?

That's a tough question sister. You and your husband are married, therefore you are now one flesh as Scripture says.

Genesis 2:24
Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

Scripture mentions how we treat our bodies, especially when we're married. Read below. As for masturbation, not 100% sure. Pray on it. I'm 100% confident if you have lustful thoughts of anyone it is wrong. In your case, sexual thoughts of your own husband is fine obviously.

1 Corinthians 7:3-5
The husband should give to his wife her conjugal rights, and likewise the wife to her husband. 4For the wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. 5 Do not deprive one another, except perhaps by agreement for a limited time, that you may devote yourselves to prayer; but then come together again, so that Satan may not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

I thought i could just quit after reading Chad's post. But i keep going back to porn and masturbation. I've try Praying, but i keep failing. Its not a one time cease and desist victory to masturbation. You first need to always pray. Try to avoid the areas in your environment where your most tempted. Try to surround yourself with other godly people to hold you accountable. Keep praying and be patient with yourself. GOD is patient with you after all.

Sex is as old as men, but it has never been so blatantly, worldwide at the forefront of human life as it seems to be today.

We read that old Rome became so corrupted within, that it fell. It fell from within. I stand to be corrected, but if I recall aright the immoral depravity of Rome brought its downfall. The mighty Empire of Rome fell not because it was over-ran by a greater power, but because the inhabitants became debauched.

Read Pauls letter to the Romans ch 1 v 16 - 32 as he warns the Saints about the debauchery of that day.

Society is becoming more depraved each year, such immoral depravity as we see results in lawlessness and corruption, and the fall of society,........history teaches

For those of you having struggles with stopping...don't think that you are a bad person, or not a true Christian. Meditate on this verse:

"He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. " - Phillipians 1:6

Turning from a sin is never easy, but we must not give up on ourselves. When you feel the temptation, rebuke it in the name of Jesus and ask God for strength. God bless!

Hey John.

I can't sit here and say that it's OK that you have failed - But here is my opinion. i)I have failed too, so who am I to say otherwise. ii)God knows we are not perfect. God knows that we struggle. I personally think it's NOT OK to sin, but God is love, and compassion. He understands that we slip up. So - you drop the ball. As long as you try to get better at it, and pray to Christ, I feel that He is ok with that. God doesn't expect perfect people. How many perfect people have walked the earth? I'm counting One.

This reminds me of the story of Sodom and Gomorrah in Genesis 19...God destroyed these cities because of the immorality and evil that consumed it.

Eventually you will win—and not because of your best efforts, but because of God's mercy ().

The one who calls you is faithful and He will do it" ().

We ask these things in the precious name of Your son, Jesus Christ."
thanks.God is our help and strength.if we trust Him he will deliver us from this evil sure.so all you struggle put your trust in Him.

I understand the dilemna's many are facing in this area. Theory and practical life are quite different. It's easy to say, "Stop it " because the Bible says so; but the frustrations in life often lead people to do things that are contrary to the word of God.

It's a holy war going on inside of us and often the evil instincts win. As Apostle Paul writes,
We know that the law is spiritual; but I am unspiritual, sold as a slave to sin. I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do - this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it. So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. For in my inner being I delight in God's law; but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. (Romans 7:13-23)

That doesn't give us a license to sin.
We must fight against sin taking the help of the Holy Spirit.
The writer of Hebrews says,
In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. (Hebrews 12:4)

We must pray to the Lord to cleanse our eyes, our mind and our thinking processes from any bad thoughts that trigger us to do the act. That's a good start. Eventually we will see the desire wane. But one has to stay alert because we can go back anytime. Stick close to the Lord, eagerly desire to obey His word. If we sincerely desire to keep ourselves clean, the Lord will help us.

Stay away from bad influences. I know it's difficult, but we have to make an effort. How many are tempted to click links that appear in the mail and on webpages which lead to sex sites. The temptation is enormous but "not clicking" is a victory.

May the Lord help us all to gain victory over our thoughts by making them captive to Christ. God bless.

is maturbation a sin according to GOD?

No doubt, much evil is done in the name of masturbation. A search on this subject on the internet (not recommended) will substantiate that. But is masturbation evil, in and of itself? Some seem to think so.

For example, the Catholic Catechism states,

By masturbation is to be understood the deliberate stimulation of the genital organs in order to derive sexual pleasure. "Both the Magisterium of the Church, in the course of a constant tradition, and the moral sense of the faithful have been in no doubt and have firmly maintained that masturbation is an intrinsically and gravely disordered action." (Catechism of the Catholic Church, copyright 1994, p. 564, #2352)

One Catholic web site plainly posts,

Masturbation is against the biblical teachings which always talks about sex with respect in the marriage context and to have children. To pursue sexual pleasure or orgasm in manner not associated with marital intercourse that is love-giving and open to the creation of new life violates the will of God and is immoral. (It is declared to violate the will of God and be immoral, yet no such teaching can be found in the word of God (Proverbs 30:5-6).

I. Arguments Against

According to the Jewish Virtual Library, masturbation is strictly forbidden.

Jewish law clearly prohibits male masturbation. This law is derived from the story of Onan (Gen. 38:8-10), who practiced coitus interruptus as a means of birth control to avoid fathering a child for his deceased brother. G-d killed Onan for this sin. Although Onan's act was not truly masturbation, Jewish law takes a very broad view of the acts prohibited by this passage, and forbids any act of ha-sh'cha'tat zerah (destruction of the seed), that is, ejaculation outside of the ******. In fact, the prohibition is so strict that one passage in the Talmud states, "in the case of a man, the hand that reaches below the navel should be chopped off." (Niddah 13a) Clearly here we have another example of Jesus' words,

This people honors Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men. (Mark 7:6-7)

Certainly, Scripture never teaches, "the hand that reaches below the navel should be chopped off," or anything like it! Nor, as is admitted above, does Genesis 38 even address the issue of masturbation. Onan "emitted" (NKJV, more literally, "ruined") on the ground. Indeed, Onan ruined or destroyed his seed on the ground, but there is a reason given as to why he did this:

lest he should give an heir [literally, "seed"] to his brother. (Genesis 38:9)

His motive for doing this was evil. He rebelled against the direct command of his father (Genesis 38:8), and displayed contempt towards both his dead brother and his wife. Indeed, this was evil in the eyes of the Lord, "therefore He killed him" (Genesis 38:10); but it was no act of masturbation. It was an ungodly act during intercourse (Genesis 38:9). The Jewish Virtual Library use of this passage is perverted.

Jews are not the only ones who teach "as doctrines the commandments of men" (Matthew 15:8-9). Broad way "Christians" do so as well, even on this particular subject. For example, Bud and Betty Miller of Christ Unlimited Ministries teach that masturbation is self-abuse and sexually immoral citing 1 Corinthians 6:18 Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body. (1 Corinthians 6:18)

The problem with their use of this passage is that masturbation is never described in the Bible as sexually immoral. The context of 1 Corinthians 6:18 is sex with a harlot (1 Corinthians 6:13-17), which is certainly sexually immoral. But, masturbation is never identified in this way.

Their self-abuse argument comes from "modern dictionaries," because masturbation is given as a synonym for self-abuse in modern dictionaries. But this begs the question at hand. Is it truly abusive, in and of itself? Is masturbation an intended use of the sex organ, or is it abuse? Obviously, people (at least those compiling the dictionaries) think so, and so they identify the term synonymously with self-abuse.

Bible Media Online, an ecumenical ministry in South Africa, argues,

The Bible gives us no direct answer to the question. It does not even mention masturbation. But we can deduct from Scripture principles that masturbation is an unnatural sexual practice. It is not according to the purpose of God who gave sex as a gift to be used between a man and his lawful wife, within the marriage bond only. Any other deliberate sexual act, where true love is not the main driving force, is unnatural.
The Bible does mention masturbation, at least, the result of it (see below), but Scripture does not teach that it is "not according to the purpose of God." Moreover, the Word of God never identifies it as "unnatural." Homosexuality is unnatural (Romans 1:26-27). Masturbation is never spoken of in this way.

Another argument that could be made, is that Colossians 3:5 says to put to death "passion."

Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, (etc. Colossians 3:5).

Also, Galatians 5:24 says,

Those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. (Galatians 5:24)

What passions are being spoken of here? Sinful passions (Romans 7:5) and vile passions (Romans 1:26) are what have been crucified and are to be put to death. Passion, in and of itself, is not evil. Otherwise, the passion found between a married couple would also have to be put to death. But, on the contrary, Scripture cultivates this passion (see the Song of Solomon and Proverbs 5:19), and never identifies self sexual gratification as an evil passion or lust.

What about "uncleanness" (Colossians 3:5)? Doesn't the law identify masturbation, or at least the result of it, unclean? Yes it does.

If any man has an emission of semen, then he shall wash all his body in water, and be unclean until evening. And any garment and any leather on which there is semen, it shall be washed with water, and be unclean until evening. (Leviticus 15:16-17; see also verse 32)

Heterosexual intercourse is not in view here, because that comes in the following verse (verse 18). Therefore, there are two ways in which this "emission of semen" could happen. The ejaculation could be the result of a wet dream, "some occurrence in the night" (NKJV Deuteronomy 23:10; NAS "nocturnal emission," Hebrew, miqqerêh-lâylâh). Or, it could be the result of masturbation. Either way, the man is "unclean" until evening.

In the law, people are called unclean, but they have done nothing evil (Romans 14:14; Colossians 2:20-22), in and of itself (e.g. Leviticus 11:39; 15:5-8, 10-11, 19-23, 27; 17:15). In fact, in Numbers 19:7-8, 10, & 22, there they are obeying God's command, yet they become “unclean.” Also, the very next verse classifies people who have been involved in heterosexual intercourse as unclean as well (Leviticus 15:18), and clearly copulation of this sort is not evil in and of itself (Hebrews 13:4).

What about 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8?

This is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one should take advantage of and defraud his brother in this matter, because the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also forewarned you and testified. For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness. Therefore he who rejects this does not reject man, but God, who has also given us His Holy Spirit. (1 Thessalonians 4:3-8)

These are some serious words to heed (Psalm 119:60)! But, again, what is being spoken of is sexual immorality, and masturbation is never identified as such. Someone may argue, "masturbation is not 'in sanctification and in honor.'" Says who? The Lord says no such thing (Proverbs 30:5-6).

II. Evil Thoughts Are Evil

Wicked men have debased minds that are filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, and evil-mindedness (Romans 1:28-29). They are "past feeling" and "have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness" (Ephesians 4:19). Therefore, it is no wonder that masturbation would be greatly abused and misused.

Jesus said,

You have heard that it was said to those of old, "You shall not commit adultery." But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart. (Matthew 5:27-28)

Jesus made it clear that adultery can be committed in the heart, even though no physical intercourse has taken place. "The imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth," (Genesis 8:21) so it would not be surprising to find evil masturbatic activity rampant in society. Masturbation with evil imaginations, which could include the use of pornographic material, is most certainly wicked.

But, masturbation, in and of itself, does not demand such evil thoughts. To say it does, goes beyond what is written (1 Corinthians 4:6), adds to the word of God (Proverbs 30:5-6), and denies Biblical freedom in Christ (Colossians 2:20-22).

III. To The Pure All Things Are Pure (Titus 1:15)

Paul wrote,

All things are lawful for me, but not all things are helpful. (1 Corinthians 10:23)

Masturbation is lawful. There is nothing in the word of God that condemns it. The Lord never even intimates that it is some form of abuse or not according to His purpose. There is nothing new under the sun (Ecclesiastes 1:9), and it is not as if this is a new thing of which the Lord was unaware! Leviticus 15:16-17 addresses the issue, at least the result of it, and no condemnation is given. Therefore, neither should we condemn what God does not (Matthew 7:1-2).

Furthermore, since it is a practice the Lord does not condemn, and Paul point blank says "All things are lawful," it is something that the pure, with pure thoughts, could practice and still be pure (Titus 1:15). In fact, those who maintain that masturbation is impure, are those who put man made regulations upon men. As Paul rebuked the Colossians for submitting to such things, saying,

If you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations - "Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle," which all concern things which perish with the using - according to the commandments and doctrines of men? These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, and neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh. (Colossians 2:20-23)

Such a regulation of "Do not touch, . . . do not handle" your genitals, i.e. do not masturbate, is a commandment and doctrine of men. It may very well have the appearance of wisdom, but no such "wisdom" is found in the word of God. It is the wisdom of the world, which God calls foolishness (1 Corinthians 3:19); and it is indeed "self-imposed religion." It may very well result in "neglect of the body," that is, the body that is crying out for relief! It is also of "no value against the indulgence of the flesh." If anything, it exacerbates the problem. People left to no sexual satisfaction whatsoever, like Catholic priests who are told they cannot masturbate or get married, are left to the temptations of the flesh with little to no power to overcome.

"But," someone might argue, "believers, who have the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:23, "self-control"), should be able to overcome in such a situation." On the contrary, Scripture identifies Spirit filled married people as those who lack self-control in this area (1 Corinthians 7:5). Spirit filled single people may as well (1 Corinthians 7:9). Having the Holy Spirit does not mandate absolute control in this arena, especially when man made standards are placed upon an individual, standards that were never meant by God to be imposed (in righteousness, that is).

Finally, Paul said, "All things are lawful, but not all things are helpful." Can masturbation be helpful? Certainly, it can be helpful in alleviating the sexual drive, as long as it is done with pure thoughts, as it is written, "To the pure, all things are pure" (Titus 1:15). A godly person, motivated by a godly motive, certainly could masturbate without it being sinful or self-seeking. For example, a man of God wanting to alleviate the sexual drive in his striving to be pure and not wanting to be in a vulnerable position for temptation towards sexual immorality via pent-up sexual desires, could certainly masturbate with this in mind (wanting to be sexually pure) and it would be pure. Nothing in the word of God condemns this.

IV. Godly Limits

Even though Paul says, "All things are lawful for me," he also says, "but I will not be brought under the power of any" (1 Corinthians 6:12). Masturbation should not control the individual. The individual should be in control of any masturbation. Self-control is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:23) and should be a continual reality in the life of any believer (Romans 8:5-6).

Also, for married people Paul writes,

Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. And likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Do not deprive one another except with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again so that Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. (1 Corinthians 7:3-5)

Since the wife and husband do not have authority over their own bodies, then masturbation should be in subjection to the spouse. In other words, any masturbation needs to be in submission to the spouse's desires and it should in no way diminish or take away from sexual intercourse and orgasm within the relationship. If it does, then a husband or a wife might deprive their spouse, either in part or in whole, in disobedience to 1 Corinthians 7:3-5.

Furthermore, as long as the spouse is available, sexual pleasure should be found in this relationship, as Proverbs declares to the man,

Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice with the wife of your youth. As a loving deer and a graceful doe, let her breasts satisfy you at all times; and always be enraptured with her love. (Proverbs 5:18-19)

V. Conclusion

Those who maintain that masturbation is evil, in and of itself, are like the Pharisees of old of whom Christ said:

They bind heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on men's shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers. (Matthew 23:4; see also Luke 11:46)

The sexual desire is a God given desire (Romans 11:36) and it is not evil in and of itself (Romans 14:14). Moreover, God has made a way for even those who are not married (male or female), or those who are away from their spouse (like a soldier at war), to at least somewhat satisfy the sexual drive via masturbation. It is oppressive to teach that such an act is against the will of God, and it is evil to maintain such a cause against the innocent in this matter (Proverbs 30:5-6).

Scripture says,

To the pure all things are pure, but to those who are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but even their mind and conscience are defiled. (Titus 1:15)

If you have been defiled on this subject by those who profess to know God but deny Him (Titus 1:16) and your conscience is not pure on this matter (Romans 14:22-23), it is high time to renew your mind.

Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God. (Romans 12:2)

This subject is a good example of Christ's words found in Matthew 11:28-30.

Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.

The commandments of men are burdensome, but God's commandments are not (1 John 5:3).

They are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh. (Proverbs 4:22)

Good thread

Scriptural references elude me, but I'd like to add the following:

A mind that dwells in the things of God and on that which God lays before him to reasonably dwell on will have little or no space or time for the wrong things.

It goes that way with me when I involve myself with this site and with constructive and positive things. I lose that manic libido I know so well, and it is replaced with a reserved version of itself that just feels more right, more appropriate. It ceases taking over my life and it is no longer the only thing I think about. I can actually get on with my life.

My opinion, based on experience - masturbation is a door best left shut.

Hi there, I'm really glad that you posted that up. I struggle with masturbation everyday. I was married that is why it is so hard to control it. I found this forum when I was trying to find a good excuse to masturbate by typing "masturbation is good for our health" on google. Some other Christian sites actually said that masturbation did not come into direct conflict with the bible and its teachings. I read what you said and it made a lot more sense. I just like to thank you for posting that up. I have shared this information with a few of my church members and I may even make a speech out of it. I struggle with the problem and I fight myself over it. One side of me says I should and the other side says I shouldn't. So far the side that says I should seems to be winning. It's so hard to control especially we live in a world full of sin and lust and on a hot day. A friend in my church told me if I wanted to have sex again I should just quickly get married again. I just don't believe that. He is a serious person but something about that sentence just seems wrong. It feels like I want to get married to someone just for the sex. I'm not that type of person. I have to develop feelings for them before I get married and I want to keep that marriage. I don't want to break it off again. I have a question. Do you think I should do what my friend suggests? if so, why? if not, why?

Thank you. It's a pleasure for me to join this forum.
