Malachi, Chapters One, Two and Three:

Chapter one starts out saying the Lord has hated Esau. But Esau says he, that is, his descendants or Edom, will return and built the desolate places. But the Lord says they shall build, but I will throw down (Malachi 1: 4). Then by Malachi 2: 11 it is clearly talking about Old Covenant Israel. "Judah hath dealt treacherously, and an abomination is committed in Israel and in Jerusalem; for Judah hath profaned the holiness of the Lord..."

Just as Esau-Edom lost its status as the chosen and tried to get it back, so did Old Covenant Israel "profane the holiness of the Lord." The implication is that Malachi is equating Old Covenant Israel with the attempt of Esau-Edom to get its heritage back by ways not pleasing to the Lord.

Then in Malachi 3: 1 it starts talking about the coming of Jesus Christ as the messenger of the covenant. "But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fuller's sope. And he shall site as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he shall purify the Sons of Levi, and purge them as gold ans silver, tat they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness."

When Jesus Christ appeared, who of Old Covenant Israel can stand in that old covenant? Christ purified and refined a remnant of Old Covenant Israel (Romans 11: 1-5), and transformed Israel into that spiritual house of I Peter 2:5, 9. Old Covenant Israel does not stand after the messenger of the covenant appears. "He taketh away the first that he may establish the second." Hebrews 10: 9
