I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat is planted in the soil and dies, it remains alone. But its death will produce many new kernels--a plentiful harvest of new lives. Those who love their life in this world will lose it. Those who care nothing for their life in this world will keep it for eternity. John 12:24-25 NLT
Plant a wheat kernel and it will move from dormancy to death. It seems unfair, harsh, and hopeless.
Oddly, this transition is a cause for joy because new life breaks the soil’s crust. One lifeless wheat kernel makes it possible for a hundred new kernels to grow.
As one who follows Jesus Christ, you intentionally plant seeds in the thinking of those who don’t follow yet. Your greatest hope is that the seeds will cause new life to grow. Yes, some seeds are plucked. Some don’t develop deep roots. Some blow away. Still, never stop sowing!
The verses above ultimately describe the transformation of Jesus from death to life, from crucifixion to resurrection, and from the one planted seed to a remarkable harvest.
Jesus always is your perfect example—and He gives you the seed.
Prayer: Dear God, You made plants grow from the death of a lone seed. You made new hearts grow from the death of Your Son. You made transformation possible from the death of self and a willingness to follow. Make this follower willing.
