I have gone to various Bibles to read this scripture, because I am not sure what to make of it.

All through the Gospel, Jesus taught about love, but in this scripture it seems quite the opposite, so it's confusing me a bit.

BBE) And turning round, he said to them, If any man comes to me, and has not hate for his father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, and even for his life, he may not be my disciple.

(Darby) If any man come to me, and shall not hate his own father and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, yea, and his own life too, he cannot be my disciple;

(GW) "If people come to me and are not ready to abandon their fathers, mothers, wives, children, brothers, and sisters, as well as their own lives, they cannot be my disciples.

(KJV) If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.

(KJV+) If any1536 man come2064 to4314 me,3165 and2532 hate3404 not3756 his1438 father,3962 and2532 mother,3384 and2532 wife,1135 and2532 children,5043 and2532 brethren,80 and2532 sisters,79 yea,(2089) and1161 his own1438 life5590 also,2532 he cannot1410, 3756 be1511 my3450 disciple.3101

(YLT) `If any one doth come unto me, and doth not hate his own father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brothers, and sisters, and yet even his own life, he is not able to be my disciple;

(Amplified) If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his [own] father and mother [in the sense of indifference to or relative disregard for them in comparison with his attitude toward God] and [likewise] his wife and children and brothers and sisters--[yes] and even his own life also--he cannot be My disciple.

Hi Word of Life, I am on an extremely slow gprs connection, so excuse me for not posting the scripture, I think you need to view this verse in the context God views the word hate.

Please go to Biblegateway.com and do a keyword search for "hate", or "hate sin", without the inverted commas.

I believe if you read the Old Testament accounts where God uses the word hate and compare it to the new, you'll see and get a sense of another aspect of our Lord. I believe the context in which Jesus says that we should hate our family and life is quite simple.

Why would Jesus say we need to follow Him? Is it not because we haven't followed Him.....do you get my drift?

He is talking about unbelievers, worldly people. Please remember that Jesus' ministry was a mere 3 years on earth, yes sure, He always spoke about the Heavenly things, but He only started to tell people to believe in Him when He was around 30 years old. So we can conclude that most if not all of these new believers had family bound to the law, Jews to be exact, or people who believed in their gods etc.

Don't become confused about the details, ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the meaning of this scripture to you, it's nice to know that even hate, when practiced by God and His people, can become something fruitful, something that becomes love.

I pray and hope I have helped some, I apologize again for not giving scripture.

God bless
Much love

Thanks Teraside for your reply, I went to that site, (Good site) I have pulled off a few scriptures for others on here to see as well.

Luke 1:71
That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;
Luke 1:70-72 (in Context) Luke 1 (Whole Chapter)

Luke 6:22
Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man's sake.
Luke 6:21-23 (in Context) Luke 6 (Whole Chapter)

Zechariah 8:17
And let none of you imagine evil in your hearts against his neighbour; and love no false oath: for all these are things that I hate, saith the LORD.
Zechariah 8:16-18 (in Context) Zechariah 8 (Whole Chapter)

There are loads more of course, but I don't think I should post all of them. Others can do the search themselves, if they want to see them.

Luke 6:22 I can relate to personally, my husband and I, are trying to reach out to people, out there, explaining to them that having a real relationship with God is very important, born in spirit is very important. We are struggling as we are having a real hard time in getting through to them.

We are off this Friday from work, for 4 weeks, we both need to come up with a different plan, I have prayed to God to guide me, but I don't think He has answered me yet, coz I still don't know what to do. Either that or I missed it, as I get too emotional.

The churches have been on my heart for such a long time now. And when reading Romans the other week I came across this scripture

Rom 9:2 That I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart.

That's how I feel.

The way I see that word "hate" in that scripture, when you are a true believer of Christ and want to take up the cross and be a disciple, maybe your family are not ready to commit themselves that far yet and refuse to decrease to allow Christ to increase. It's tuff, believe me, denying oneself, has been a battle for me, because of all this worldly stuff, which God hates and you know what, I hate it too, because I know He hates it.

When Jesus used the word equivelant to the English word 'hate' the original Greek rendering was from a primary word 'misos' which by extension; to love less or less hateful. This figurative use operates on a relative scale i.e., God is to be loved more than family or self.

Yes DunkedinFire, I went into another scripture and understand it bit more now. God must come first always, even before family, friends and any other worldly things.

Mat 6:19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal:

For example, if I have a hobby, say tennis and that it taking up a lot of my time and it becomes my life, of course that will separate me away from God and tennis would become more important to me. So when one becomes Christians we need to sacrifice a whole load of things, so Christ can increase and me can decrease.

Not give up everything, but plan our time accordingly, so that we spend time with God too, which is important.
