Love Jesus? Obey his commandments. John 14:15-30

John 14 has become somewhat of an exclamation-point to my relationship with Christ in the past year. I'm sure I had read it in times past, but somehow I missed the message (maybe I was somewhere else). It feels like Jesus is calling me closer and is doing so with this Chapter.

I grew up in the church, yet the emphasis of this scripture (the scripture below) has never set in, until just recently. Since this realization, I have become more dedicated to understanding all of Jesus commandments and following them (not an easy task), and in doing so am constantly being shown the error of my ways.

Currently I am reading the gospels (very slowly) and reflecting on Jesus commandments (he says a lot!). To say the least, it is drastically changing me. My relationship has become much more serious, more grounded, I am slowly weeding out my understanding and realizing how much I was (and am still) leaning on it. It is so easy to use scripture when it suits, but to live by the scripture/commandments that Jesus has delivered is a whole different ballgame.

Are we really loving Jesus if we don't obey his commandments? How can we accept his commandments if we don't really know them? Can we receive the Holy Spirit without obeying his commandments?

John 14:15-29
15. If you love me, obey my commandments.
16. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.
17. He is the Holy Spirit, who leads into all truth. The world cannot receive him, because it isn't looking for him and doesn't recognize him. But you know him, because he lives with you now and will later be in you.
18. No I will not abandon you as orphans -- I will come to you.
19. Soon the world will no longer see me, but you will see me. Since I live, you will also live.
20. When I am raised to life again, you will know that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.
21. Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them.
22. Judas said to him, "Lord, why are you going to reveal yourself only to us and not the world at large?
23. Jesus replied, "All who love me will do what I say. My Father will love them, and we will come and make our home with each of them.
24. Anyone who doesn't love me will not obey me. And remember, my words are not my own. What I am telling you is from the Father who sent me
25. I am telling you these things now while I am still with you
26. But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative--that is, the Holy Spirit--he will teach you everything and remind you of everything I have told you.
27. I am leaving you with a gift--peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don't be troubled or afraid.
28. Remember what I told you: I am going away, but I will come back to you again. If you really loved me, you would be happy that I am going to the Father, who is greater than I am.
29. I have told you these things before they happen so that when they do happen, you will believe.
30.I don't have much more time to talk to you, because the ruler of this world approaches. He has no power over me,

31. But I will do what the Father requires of me, so that the world will know that I love the Father. Come, let's be going.

  • What is his commandments that you must obey?

Here is a start...

Matt 5:17; "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.
Matt 5:18; "For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
Matt 5:19; "Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
Matt 5:20; "For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Matt 5:21; "You have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT MURDER' and 'Whoever commits murder shall be liable to the court.'

Matt 5:22; "But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty before the court; and whoever says to his brother, 'You good-for-nothing,' shall be guilty before the supreme court; and whoever says, 'You fool,' shall be guilty enough to go into the fiery hell.

Matt 5:27; "You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY';

Matt 5:33; "Again, you have heard that the ancients were told, 'YOU SHALL NOT MAKE FALSE VOWS, BUT SHALL FULFILL YOUR VOWS TO THE LORD.'

Matt 5:43; "You have heard that it was said, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR and hate your enemy.'

Matt 5:44; "But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,
Matt 5:45; so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
Matt 5:46; "For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?
Matt 5:47; "If you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?

Matt 6:14; "For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.

Matt 6:15; "But if you do not forgive others, then your Father will not forgive your transgressions.

Matt 7:12; "In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets.

Matt 7:21; "Not everyone who says to Me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father who is in heaven will enter.
Matt 7:22; "Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?'
Matt 7:23; "And then I will declare to them, 'I never knew you; DEPART FROM ME, YOU WHO PRACTICE LAWLESSNESS.'

Matt 7:24; "Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, may be compared to a wise man who built his house on the rock.
Matt 7:25; "And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and yet it did not fall, for it had been founded on the rock.
Matt 7:26; "Everyone who hears these words of Mine and does not act on them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand.
Matt 7:27; "The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and slammed against that house; and it fell--and great was its fall."

Mark 10:19; "You know the commandments, 'DO NOT MURDER, DO NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, DO NOT STEAL, DO NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS, Do not defraud, HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER.'" ... (see Eph 6:2; )

Matt 15:3; And He answered and said to them, "Why do you yourselves transgress the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition?
Matt 15:4; "For God said, 'HONOR YOUR FATHER AND MOTHER,' and, 'HE WHO SPEAKS EVIL OF FATHER OR MOTHER IS TO BE PUT TO DEATH.'

Matt 22:36; "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?"

Matt 22:37; And He said to him, " 'YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND.'
Matt 22:38; "This is the great and foremost commandment.
Matt 22:39; "The second is like it, 'YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.' ... (see Rom 13:8-10; )
Matt 22:40; "On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets."

1 Jn 3:23; This is His commandment, that we believe in the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, just as He commanded us.

1 Jn 3:24; The one who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. We know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

1 Jn 4:12; No one has seen God at any time; if we love one another, God abides in us, and His love is perfected in us.
1 Jn 4:13; By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us, because He has given us of His Spirit.

Matt 5:17; "Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill
This is a classic mis-used scripture that we must follow the law.
Any of God's laws sole purpose is to inform us what it takes to be righteous. This has nothing to do with us fulfilling the law but Jesus fulfilling the law through us. With him in us, God imputes righteousness to us, not because of us but because of Jesus's righteousness through us and thus, the law if fulfilled!. God's law requires righteousness; Jesus does that for us! Much live our father Abraham, whereby, God reckoned him to have righteousness not because of what he had done but because of Abraham's faith!

Matt 5:18; "For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
That is correct! Only Jesus was the only one to abide by the laws perfectly. Now that he lives in us, God credits us with obeying the law and this way, the law will never pass away!

We can do none of these scriptures perfectly. But with Christ abiding (living) in you, God attributes you Christ's perfection in all these matters!

Abraham's actions and obedience to God are what "reckoned as righteousness"

Heb 11:17; By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was offering up his only begotten son;

Jas 2:21; Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up Isaac his son on the altar?
Jas 2:22; You see that faith was working with his works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected;
Jas 2:23; and the Scripture was fulfilled which says, "AND ABRAHAM BELIEVED GOD, AND IT WAS RECKONED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS," and he was called the friend of God.
Jas 2:24; You see that a man is justified by works and not by faith alone.

Jesus fulfills the law with grace. When we fail (none of us can obey the commandments 100%) that's when His grace covers us.
It doesn't mean sin all all you want. It doesn't mean if you go on sinning willfully I will cover you. The more we sin, the more grace must increase.

Rom 6:1; What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase?
Rom 6:2; May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?

Abraham's actions and obedience to God are what "reckoned as righteousness"
Yes, Abraham put his faith, which came first, into an action of obedience. He even got his faith before he obediently got circumcised. So why did God say he imputed righteousness because of his faith...why didn't God say he imputed Abraham with righteousness because of actions and obedience. You can't deny or re-write scripture: Abraham's faith came first, which God gave him. Then followed actions based on his faith.

A lot of Paul's teachings are centered around the commandments in a way.
A lot of people look at a verse like this...

1 Cor 6:9; Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals,
1 Cor 6:10; nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.

.. and say what does have to do with the commandments?
But if we compare this, to Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy things start coming together.

idolatry is mentioned in verse 9 above.

Exod 20:3; "You shall have no other gods before Me.
Exod 20:4; "You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
Exod 20:5; "You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,
Exod 20:23; 'You shall not make other gods besides Me; gods of silver or gods of gold, you shall not make for yourselves.

adultery is mentioned in verse 9 above

Exod 20:14; "You shall not commit adultery.

homosexuals are mentioned in verse 9 above.

Lev 18:22; 'You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination.

effeminate are mentions in verse 9 above.

Deut 22:5; "A woman shall not wear man's clothing, nor shall a man put on a woman's clothing; for whoever does these things is an abomination to the LORD your God.

Thievery is mentioned in verse 10.

Exod 20:15; "You shall not steal.

Coveting is mentioned in verse 10 above.

Exod 20:17; "You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor."

I am not clear what these scriptures has to do with the Margoeli's main thread.

These 1 Cor scriptures by Paul have nothing to do with obeying the commandments. They were about who wouldn't be saved and inherit God's kingdom.

I Corinthians 14:37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.

Are the commandments for everyone or just Corinth? And ... WHO needs to bother with them? Surely not Christians, right? I mean, if you are a prophet or spiritual you should acknowledge that Paul writes a bunch of commandments, but apparently they are for people ... that ... won't ever read the letters or enter the temple? I can see all the Corinthians running around in the streets outside of the temple, trying to show Paul's commandments to the unbelievers out there, condemning them to Hell if they don't join them.

Stephen: "What? I'll go to Hell because of the fornication and adultery that I commit? Joseph, you were at the whorehouse last night too!"
Joseph: "Yes, but Jesus is my righteousness for me. Here, take a Bible and remember that John 3:16 and Ephesians 2:8 are the only verses that you have to worry about. Everything else is for unbelievers."

Sorry, won't/can't/don't buy it.

John 14:15; "If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.

1 Jn 2:3; By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments.
1 Jn 2:4; The one who says, "I have come to know Him," and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him;
1 Jn 3:22; and whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do the things that are pleasing in His sight.
1 Jn 5:3; For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.
Rev 12:17; So the dragon was enraged with the woman, and went off to make war with the rest of her children, who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus.
Rev 14:12; Here is the perseverance of the saints who keep the commandments of God and their faith in Jesus.

There are those that believe most everything in the Bible still applies, and there are those who choose to say all the verses above no longer apply.

Matt 5:19; "Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

  • :)God bless your spiritual journey!
  • What is his commandments that you must obey?

Thank you RJ!

As for his commandments, I am starting with the gospels. I've been reading Matthew for around two months now, but verrry slowly. I find that I read a few verses, get blown away, and then ponder. Then I move onto the next few lines the next day

Here's a recap of what I've underlined that has jumped out at me. Now some of these aren't commandments of Jesus, but in one way or another spoke to me as important. To be honest, it's all important, I actually have brackets around pretty much everything. In my bible, I have exclamation marks next to verses I really feel moved by and/or that seems really important to reflect on because of the seriousness of it, and question marks next to verses that I look further into, with additional resources.

Matthew 1:18
This is how Jesus the Messiah was born. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. But before the marriage took place, while she was still a virgin, she became pregnant through the holy spirit.

Matthew 3:15
But Jesus said, "It should be done, for we must carry out all that God requires." So John baptized him

Matthew 4:19
Jesus called out to them, "Come follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people!"

Matthew 5:3-12
The Beatitudes

Matthew 5:13-16
Salt of the Earth
Light of the World

Matthew 5:17-20
17. "Don't misunderstand why I have come. I did not come to abolish the law of Moses or the writings of the prophets. No, I came to accomplish their purpose.
18. I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not even the smallest detail of God's law will disappear until its purpose is achieved.
19. So if you ignore the least commandment and teach others to do the same, you will be called least in the Kingdom of Heaven. But anyone who obeys God's laws and teaches them will be called great in the Kingdom of Heaven.
20. But I warn you--unless your righteousness is better than the righteousness of the teachers of religious law and the pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven

Matthew 5:21-26
Teaching about anger

Particularly 5:22...

22.
But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgement!

Matthew 5:27-32
Teaching about Adultery and Divorce

Matthew 5:33-37
Teaching about Vows
Particularly 5:37

37. Just say a simple, 'Yes, I will,' or 'No, I won't.' Anything beyond this is from the evil one.

Matthew 5:38-42
Teaching about Revenge
Particularly 5:39...

39. But I say, do not resist an evil person! If someone slaps you on the right cheek offer the other cheek also

Matthew 5:43-48
Teaching about Love for Enemies
Particularly 5:44-45...

44. But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you!
45. In that way you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike.

Matthew 6: 1-4
Teaching about how to give to the Needy

Matthew 6: 5-18
Teaching about Prayer and Fasting
Particularly 6:9-13...

9. Pray like this: Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy
10. May your Kingdom come soon. May your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
11. Give us today the food we need,
12. and forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us.
13. And don't let us yield to temptation, but rescue us from the evil one.

Matthew 6:19-34

Teaching about Money and possesions
Particularly 6:27...

27. Can all your worries add a single moment to your life?

and 6:33...

33. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

Matthew 7:1-6
Do Not Judge Others
This whole section is underlined with exclamation marks in my bible, I really love the truth in what Jesus says. Like I've said before, it kind of blows my mind, the truth and richness in it.

Matthew 7:7-11
Effective Prayer
This verse has been my favorite since I was a little girl, also in Luke 11:9
Matthew 7:7-8...

7. Keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you.
8. For everyone who asks receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened.

.......I could continue on later today if you'd like, but I must go do some housework now:)

Here's a recap of what I've underlined that has jumped out at me. Now some of these aren't commandments of Jesus, but in one way or another spoke to me as important. To be honest, it's all important, I actually have brackets around pretty much everything
Yes, all of it is a daunting task for one person to accomplish, how do we do it?
It is "all important" . If you really look at it, there are hundreds of commandments which, coming from God can only be categorized as holy, righteous and blameless.
That's what he calls us, holy, righteous and blameless but how is this possible? for God calls for perfection: James 2:10...For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles at just one point is guilty of breaking all of it. We can no more be holy, righteous and blameless perfectly, 24/7, than we are capable of performing all of God's commandments perfectly.

Thank God for his perfect gift of grace through Jesus Christ in us! Jesus said that he didn't come to abolish the law (all commandments) but to fulfill them. How is this possible?
We love all of God's laws because through them we see him. Jesus was the only one to live on earth that was capable of accomplishing all of the laws perfectly.

Jesus in us, imputes this perfection in and through us and fulfills the law through us. John 15:5..."I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.
Completing God's commandments is a daunting task, but with Jesus in us, all is possible!
