Devotions
I don't know who writes these. I get them every day in my e-mail thanks to my sister ladylovesJesus. I think this one is really good, so I'll share it too:
Todays Devotional - Tuesday April 17th - Love is...
Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth … love one another deeply, from the heart. 1 Peter 1:22
It was Foreigner whose number 1 hit back in 1984 began with the words: 'I want to know what love is'. Today the true meaning of love is becoming harder to find, as song lyrics, films and Gossip columns trumpet the romantic and the sexual. Few would link love to holiness the way Peter does, but it is here that we see what 'love is'.
Peter is delighted at the affection his readers show for one another which flows naturally from their walk with Jesus. In calling them to love one another deeply he uses a different Greek word for love, often used of God's love for us, asking us to call on God to so work in our hearts that we display his glory in how we seek each other's good.
This is part of true holiness - a separation from the self indulgence to giving ourselves away in service and so discovering that secret displayed by Jesus Himself who came 'not to be served but to serve and give himself as a ransom for many'.
This is a mark of holiness, not the quiet, austere, solemn piety sometimes mistaken for holiness, but people so changed by Christ that they are prepared to love the unlovely, forgive the unforgiving, feed the ungrateful and do so because they can't imagine doing anything else. This is the answer Foreigner was looking for!
Dear Lord, Create in me a heart of love for all that You bring across my path. Amen

1 Corinthians 1:18
The message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
Thoughts on today's verse
Power! We love power. We love the sound and fury of power. We love the ability to change things that power brings. But the greatest power ever unleashed on this earth was the power displayed when the Almighty God held back his power while his Son was persecuted and murdered so we could be saved. Now that's an awesome display of power.
