“You are near, O Lord,
And all Your commandments are truth.
Of old I have known from Your testimonies
That You have founded them forever.” (Psalm 119:151-152 NASB)

I was part of the gatherings of the church from infancy on up. My parents were part of that same church fellowship all 86 years of their lives, and their parents before them, from the beginning of that particular church fellowship 130 years ago. And the teaching I received from infancy to adulthood was founded in the Scriptures, and I was taught repentance, obedience, and submission to God as Lord of my life. And I was taught service to God.

When I was old enough, my parents gave me permission to sit down at the front of the room where our services were held to where I could listen to the preaching without distraction. And I drank in the teachings of the Scriptures. And whenever we had missionaries speaking during missions conferences, my heart was pulled in the direction of becoming a missionary one day, to take the message of the gospel of Christ to the people of the world.

When I was a senior in high school we got a new pastor, and he was such a gifted teacher of the Scriptures who taught under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. And his sermons usually lasted not less than 45 minutes each, but I could have sat there and listened to him preach for hours. And I began taking notes on everything he taught, and I could not wait to get back to the Sunday evening and the Wednesday night gatherings to hear even more.

Every week I was taught the Scriptures in Sunday School, then in the Sunday morning and the Sunday evening church services, and youth group, and then Bible study on Wednesday evenings. And then I had my personal times of Bible study, too. And as I got older we had small group Bible studies during the week in people’s homes, too. And I was in Youth for Christ in Jr and Senior High. So, from of old I have been taught from God’s testimonies.

Then the Lord called me to be a teacher of the Scriptures at age 16, I believe it was. I taught children’s Sunday school, and I taught child evangelism back yard Bible clubs for two years. And I taught women’s Bible studies for many years, under the direction of the Holy Spirit. And my husband and I worked with youth groups, and then we began a college age Bible study ministry out of our home which lasted for 7 ½ years.

And then the Lord called me to this ministry 21 years ago to write down what he is teaching me from my times with him each day in his word and to post these writings on the internet, so that a “herald could run with it.” And now I am a missionary to the nations of the world, because, via the internet, the teachings of the Scriptures are going out to people of many nations throughout the world, all because of God’s grace, and all in his power and wisdom and strength. All glory to God for what he has done!

So, when I read this passage of Scripture this morning, it took me back to see how God was working in my life even from infanthood to prepare me for the ministry to which he called me these 21 years ago. For truly I have known the Scriptures from my childhood, and now I am old (soon to be 76 years of age). All this was and is of God! Without God I would not be where I am today, doing what he has called me to do and to be. All glory to God!

But no matter where you are, if you are just hearing about Jesus and if you are just learning the Scriptures, or if you have been taught the Scriptures from infanthood, and you have learned the Scriptures all of your life, it is of critical importance that we are students of the Scriptures, who drink in their truths, and who desire to learn what they teach so that we can apply their truths to our daily lives. We need to study them for ourselves daily!

And be people of God who love the teachings of the Scriptures, who desire to hear from the Lord each day, and who want to do the will of God. Love God and love his word! Get your truth from the Scriptures, and test everyone and everything you hear coming from the mouths of other humans to make certain that what you are receiving and believing is literally the truth of what the Scriptures teach and not the lies so popularized today.

For Jesus Christ taught that to come to him we must deny self, take up our cross daily (die daily to sin), and follow (obey) him. For if we hold on to living in sin and for self, we will lose our lives for eternity. But if we deny self, die daily to sin, by the Spirit, and we walk in obedience to our Lord and to his commands, in his power, then we have eternal life with God. For not everyone who calls him “Lord” will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one DOING (obeying) the will of God (see Luke 9:23-26; Matthew 7:21-23).

As the Deer

By Martin J. Nystrom
Based off Psalm 42:1

As the deer panteth for the water
So my soul longeth after You
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship You

You alone are my strength, my shield
To You alone may my spirit yield
You alone are my heart's desire
And I long to worship You
