But now is the time to get rid of anger, rage, malicious behavior, slander, and dirty language. Colossians 3:8

The great Hall of Fame basketball coach John Wooden, who coached the UCLA Bruins to an amazing ten NCAA championships between 1963 and 1975, is remembered as a tough but loving disciplinarian who held his players to high standards of behavior, even at practice.

Wooden once said, “I had three rules for my players: No profanity. Don’t criticize a teammate. Never be late.” By today’s standards, Wooden’s prohibition against profanity seems outdated and square. In the world of big-time collegiate athletics, foul language is part of the everyday life of many coaches and players, even during games. You need only sit within earshot of certain coaches during hotly contested games to know that!

It might surprise some Christian men and women to hear this, but God has implemented the same rule for us today. Speaking through the apostle Paul in today’s verse, He tells believers to “get rid…of dirty language.”

Foul language can be a problem area for many Christians, especially those who come from rough backgrounds where profanity was part of who they were. But with God’s help through the Holy Spirit, you can have victory over bad language. Ask Him to help you do what you can’t do yourself. When you do that, you please your Father in heaven…and also make yourself a better witness for Jesus Christ.

Four language is certainly crude, low caliber, but! Consider now...that is not profanity. Profanity is; as an adjective characterized by irreverence or contempt for God or sacred principles or things; irreligious.
not devoted to holy or religious purposes; unconsecrated; secular (opposed to sacred).
unholy; heathen; pagan:
not initiated into religious rites or mysteries, as persons.
common or vulgar.

As a verb; to misuse (anything that should be held in reverence or respect); defile; debase; employ basely or unworthily.
to treat (anything sacred) with irreverence or contempt; violate the sanctity of:

The KJV translates Strong's H2490 in the following manner: begin (52x), profane (36x), pollute (23x), defile (9x), break (4x), wounded (3x), eat (2x), slay (2x), first (1x), gather grapes (1x), inheritance (1x), began men (1x), piped (1x), players (1x), prostitute (1x), sorrow (1x), stain (1x), eat as common things (1x).
Outline of Biblical Usage [?]

to profane, defile, pollute, desecrate, begin

(Niphal)

to profane oneself, defile oneself, pollute oneself

ritually

sexually

to be polluted, be defiled

(Piel)

to profane, make common, defile, pollute

to violate the honour of, dishonour

to violate (a covenant)

to treat as common

(Pual) to profane (name of God)

(Hiphil)

to let be profaned

to begin

(Hophal) to be begun

to wound (fatally), bore through, pierce, bore

(Qal) to pierce

(Pual) to be slain

(Poel) to wound, pierce

(Poal) to be wounded

(Piel) to play the flute or pipe

Strong’s Definitions [?](Strong’s Definitions Legend)
חָלַל châlal, khaw-lal'; a primitive root (compare H2470); also denominative (from H2485) properly, to bore, i.e. (by implication) to wound, to dissolve; figuratively, to profane (a person, place or thing), to break (one's word), to begin (as if by an 'opening wedge'); to play (the flute):—begin (× men began), defile, × break, defile, × eat (as common things), × first, × gather the grape thereof, × take inheritance, pipe, player on instruments, pollute, (cast as) profane (self), prostitute, slay (slain), sorrow, stain, wound.

Now my point is; Profanity is not just bad language...Profanity is anything that one does that is contradictory to Gods Word.

Hearing foul language is enough to keep us from getting into heaven. Thank goodness we are getting new bodies! Mine are FILTHY. Mouth too from before. Imagine this- imagine you had a maggot in your mouth for every foul word ever spoken. Ewww!
I am trying so hard to stop for good. Profanity sounds so trashy really.

Dear Sister,
I don't think as you say, that "hearing foul language is enough to keep us from getting into heaven."
However, being the one who uses it, doesn't mean that one can't change! You have an awesome helper in the Holy Spirit to do just that! There is enough scripture about the tongue to put you in the state of mind that controlling it, with the help of the Holy Spirit is necessary for a believer.

In my younger days, it was real easy to use, as well as be around. The streets I used to run, military, and being later in Corrections, these environments were prone for it. Making a concerted effort to not use it, has had me not be at fault in this area for a long time, but it took faith to step up and say something when others would use it. That I eventually did, and those around me got the hint that I didn't approve of it, and so they too began to change, at least in front of me! :-)

I'll send a prayer Heavenward on your behalf sister!

With the Love of Christ Jesus.

Foul language is hatred breaking out from its constraints. James says we cannot control our tongue. So at best we can only modify our cuss words to legally skirt the system. The way to get to the root of the problem is to walk in the Spirit. Every time we cuss we are cussing God out because he controls all situations we end up in.

Thank you so much! Yes hearing it can make your ears unclean which is unholy and we have to be careful of who we are around because hearing it can also be enough to slip us up. This is probably half the reason we get new bodies because of all the " filthy" pollution our earthly bodies are exposed to and nothing filthy or defiled is in heaven. I think we will be surprised at all the human things we think that are " ok" actually are not ok in heaven. In the spiritual realm things are one or the other. No in between. So we need to be very careful with things that are not of God no matter how innocent they seem. Things like makeup, workout clothes, anything secular, and what you hear DOES have an impact. You cannot listen to heavy metal or music that does not glorify God and get into heaven. God made us to glorify Him and we do not.( from a worldly view)
