Todays Devotional - Standing firm
They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm. Psalm 20:8
It’s tempting to take things into our own hands when troubles come our way, but as Christians we are encouraged to stand firm in the face of adversity - sometimes easier said than done. Here is an opportunity to allow God to turn our troubles into His victories. But how do we do it? How do we rise up and stand firm?
Isaiah 40 v 31 says: ‘They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles.’ God gives us the capacity to soar above our difficulties and see them for what they are. The illustration of the eagle is one of strength and it is no wonder that armies and countries have chosen this bird for their standards. A mother eagle has great affection for her young. When they are old enough to fly she takes them on her wings until they are confident to fly by themselves. When it’s time for the eaglets to leave the nest the mother destroys it so they can no longer cling to the security of their home - they must now fend for themselves.
Sometimes it seems God allows what we have held dear to be destroyed. He stirs up our nests and we are bewildered by his actions. That’s when we can use our spiritual wings to see his perspective and not our own, and as we wait on Him we will find our strength returning. We will be able to stand firm once more. Looking back, we’ve less excuse to ignore the significance of this King’s call on our lives.
Lord, I believe; help my unbelief (Mark 9:24).
