I read this today and have never even considered the link with Cinderella before so wanted to share this with you all to bless you too.

Not forgotten! Are these all the sons you have? There is still the youngest, but he is tending the sheep. 1 Samuel 16:11

The story of Cinderella is one that inspires and excites the imagination of all of us, not only children at the pantomime but adults who may be feeling rejected - as long as we allow it to capture us.

What a great story that the one who is overlooked and left behind doing the chores is the one the prince will choose to marry. But Cinderella is only a poor copy of the story of God choosing David to be his king!

David was considered to be the last and therefore the least. Jesse had the perfect number of sons - seven and then there was David. Jesse had not even considered him worthy of consideration. He was away somewhere else looking after the sheep, as he always did. Doing the boring, dirty and sometimes dangerous backroom job. But there, where no one but God could see, David was learning many skills, watching vigilantly, looking after the weakest, finding resources for the flock and, not least, learning to sing God's praises.

Many years later would come a carpenter in a northern town, well away from the centre of political and religious vitality. But He would be the Saviour of the world. This obscure young man, David, was only going to be Israel's greatest King.

A prayer for today

Watching God, thank You that You often choose people who seem insignificant in the world's eyes. Thank You that You always honour those who honour You. Amen.
