Live as free people, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as God's slaves. 1 Peter 2:16
On Independence Day in America, it’s appropriate to consider your understanding of freedom as it compares to the scriptures. In today’s verse, Peter calls Christians to live as free people who don’t use the freedom they have been given to secretly indulge in evil. In today’s culture, that can be a constant temptation.
In 1 Peter 2:11, the apostle Peter described self-indulgence as “sinful desires, which wage war against your soul” Bible commentator Adam Clarke says this about worldly people: “While others spend all their time, and employ all their skill, in acquiring earthly property, and totally neglect the salvation of their souls; they are not strangers, they are here at home; they are not pilgrims, they are seeking an earthly possession: Heaven is your home, seek that.”
To live otherwise is to return to bondage.
Evaluate how you spend your free time Make a list of your activities over the course of the next week and then total the amount of time you spent satisfying your whims and compare it to the amount of time you spent feeding your soul. You are called to live as one of God’s slaves. Do your findings reflect that?
