The officers answered, Never man spake like this man. Then answered them the Pharisees, Are ye also deceived? Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him? John 7:46-48 KJV

Jesus’ appearance at the Feast of Tabernacles highlights the diverging opinions about Him. As He taught in the temple, people both murmured and marveled. Some said He was demon possessed (John 7:20), while others believed, asking, “When Christ cometh, will he do more miracles than these?” (v. 31)

The chief priests and Pharisees, leaders who felt threatened by Jesus, decided to send men to arrest Him. When the officers returned empty-handed, saying, “Never man spake like this man,” the leadership was incensed. “Are you also deceived?” they mocked. “Have any of the rulers or of the Pharisees believed on him?”

In reality, the officers were the wise ones. Having heard Jesus directly, they made their own judgment based on His words. It didn’t matter to them what the “intelligent class” thought.

Today, many oppose and mock Jesus. Others claim His name while contradicting His teaching. As Christians, we must listen to Him, ordering our lives by scripture, regardless of anyone else’s view. Let’s even double-check our favorite teachers, as the “noble” Bereans did with the apostle Paul: “they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so” (Acts 17:11).

Prayer: Lord, help me tune out this world’s opinions to focus entirely on You.
