"Drink no wine or strong drink, you or your sons with you, when you go into the tent of meeting, lest you die. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations. You are to distinguish between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean, and you are to teach the people of Israel all the statutes that the LORD has spoken to them by Moses." Leviticus 10:9-11 ESV
God led Israel, literally by cloud and fire, morally by giving them His Law, and vicariously through the priesthood. He designated to provide offerings on behalf of the people. Aaron, Moses’ brother, was the first high priest of Israel, and he knew how serious his job was.
In Leviticus 10, Aaron’s sons—Nadab and Abihu—didn’t take their jobs seriously, possibly even performing their duties while drunk. As a result, God struck them dead, and Aaron wasn’t allowed to mourn them as he might have, lest he become ritually unclean. Instead, his other sons—Eleazar and Ithamar—stepped up and fulfilled their dead brothers’ responsibilities.
Leaders, whether high priests or presidents or Little League coaches, are to lead with sober minds, teaching those in their care the difference between clean and unclean living. We are to uphold those things that are important to God through our example and through our words. If we don’t, God may replace us with someone who will.
Prayer: God, may I follow You as I lead others with a sober mind.
