“Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh” (Gal 5:16). To “walk in the Spirit” is the only measure of right living for the Christian. Do you inquire, “What is it to walk in the Spirit? It is to walk in communion with the Father, by the Holy Spirit, having the Lord Jesus Christ as my one Object. Nor am I left in this to the sentimental fancies of my own mood, nor to the fickleness of my own impulses, nor to the bias of my own religious likes and dislikes.

“The Word of God must necessarily be my only chart. “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to Thy Word” (Ps 119:9). Look at the martyr Stephen for a blessed pattern of it. What engaged the attention of this man of God, “full of faith and power,” this man full of the Holy Spirit? Two things. The Word of God on earth, and the Son of God in glory—Acts 6 and 7.

Many Christians fall into the serious mistake of making the moral law their standard of holy living. But the law never gave man an object outside himself; grace does. If I am trying to keep the law for salvation, who is it for? Myself. Yes, self is my real object. If, when I have once possessed salvation, I am trying to keep the law in order to retain it, what is my object? For whom do I want to retain it? For myself, to be sure. Then self is my object.

On the other hand, grace puts a new object before the saved one, and the Holy Spirit supplies a new spring of action entirely. Self is displace by the Lord Jesus, and human efforts by the Spirit’s activities. “He died for all, that they which live should not henceforth live unto themselves, but unto Him which died for them, and rose again” (2 Cor 5:15).

“But I thought,” says one, “that though we are not under the law for justification, we are under it for holy living.” No. There is no higher standard of holiness than “walking in the Spirit,” and on this point the Word of God could not possibly be plainer: “If ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law” (Gal 5:18).

Do not be alarmed. We are not fostering the lawless spirit of the age, nor granting to anyone, much less the Christian, a license to break the law. No, the very opposite. Rather, the righteous requirement of the law is “fulfilled in us (not by us), who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit” (Rom 8:4). We have seen in Galatians 5:18 that if we are led of the Spirit we are not under the law. So that it is as though the Apostle had said that the righteous requirement of the law is fulfilled in us who are not under the law (all who are saved are led by the Spirit through the “new man” and the unsaved by Satan through the “old man”: note mine—NC).

“The law was not made for a righteous man” (1 Tim 1:9). In itself the law is “holy, just and good; but when it was applied to man in the flesh, the unrighteous man, it only made manifest what was already there. “The carnal mind is enmity against God” (Rom 8:7).

Let us now look at the other side. And what a refreshing contrast it is to turn from the old to the new. But what, it may be asked, is the new spring? It is nothing less than the Spirit of God—“the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus” (Rom 8:2). And what do we get from this source? Why, the first fruit produced by the Spirit is the very thing which the law demanded, but could not produce, love!

Every one born of God loves (1 John 4:7, 8; 1 Cor 13:1-3); but it is not after a natural order at all. Man naturally loves because of what the object is. But that is not the way the Christian loves, at least it is not the only way. He loves not merely because of what he sees in another who is naturally amiable and attractive, but because of that which the Father has put into him; that is, a new life—a life in the power of the Spirit, a life in the Son who is Love.

The Father did not love us because of any merit in us to draw it out, but because of what was in Himself—because of what His own heart was. Our love, as Christians, is after the same order; it is divine in character. Hence, “Everyone that loveth is born of God and knoweth God.” “If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and His love is perfected in us.” “We love Him, because He first loved us” (John 4:7, 12, 19).

Henceforth we are exhorted to “walk in love”; that is, we are to allow the divine life—this life, after a new creation order—to have, so to speak, its own way in us; we are to follow its divine instincts, and to find our happiness in its unhindered manifestation.

We are not to use our liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but in love to serve one another. The only thing that can now avail, says the Apostle, is the “faith which worketh by love” (Gal 5:6). In other words, the very thing which the law vainly demanded, grace has richly supplied. Thus the righteous requirement of the law will be fulfilled in us who are not under it—who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

While the law told me what I ought to be for God, and that I came short of the glory of God (Rom 3:23), even at my very best, grace tells me what God has been for me at my very worst. “Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.” The very person who, in the light of God’s presence says, “There is no good thing in me,” that is, in my flesh, can say with equal certainty, “There is no condemnation for me,” in the Lord Jesus Christ.

More than this, the Father is causing the worst things in our earthly path to work together for our heavenly good (Rom 8:28). So that the believer can say, “Though no good thing I deserve, yet no good thing will He withhold (Psa 84:11). If He gives me to see no good here, I can with confidence turn my heart away and say, it is all good there. My Father has found all in His Beloved Son, and all I want I have in Him also.” “Seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For ye died, and your life is hid with Christ in God” (Col 3:1-3).

What grace does is give us a choice! God wants us to have the choice! Live in Love and truth or sin !

The law of moses Never gave anyone a choice! But then it again ? It never saved anyone !

Love is not the easy way out ! Love is endless and without self serving !

One important thing , I have posted a few times !
Faith only works by LOVE ! It one of the very main reasons our prayers might appear not too be answered !

Gal_5:6 For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth any thing, nor uncircumcision; but faith which worketh by love.
1Co 13:5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own

Of course if we walk and live though our Spirit ? Then we will walk in LOVE and of Course want to be led by His Spirit 100% of the time !

Our Spirit is made in the image of JESUS CHRIST! We clearly see His desire was Always to obey the father 1 He being the pattern and example for every Holy Righteous child of God almighty !

Our Spirit wants to please God just as much as Our LORD JESUS DID and Does !

1Jn 4:17 Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.

Our flesh and flesh mind is NOT in His image !

Hi Spirit1st - Thanks for your reply and in brief, I believe the Law was intended only to reveal sin and not deliver from it (Heb 7:19), thereby incurring guilt (John 15:22, 24; Rom 5:13), because deliverance is never effected by man, but by God--through the Holy Spirit within man (Eze. 4:6).

The Lord's spiritual state (sinless--Heb 4:15) and resurrected body exemplifies what is intended for the eternal state (1 Cor 15:37; Phil 3:21), apart from the deity of course, and was not intended (even in Adam and Eve) for this life, or God would have done everything differently. His intention has always been that His Holy Spirit would be an eternal part of the believer (John 14:16; Rev 22:17) once indwelt, which will forever sustain the life of Christ in the believer (Col 3:4).

God has never intended for man to effect fellowship with Himself apart from the life of His Son; this the OT foreshadowed and the NT produced (complete in Christ, incomplete in self now but not later), which is the "Everlasting Covenant" or "testament" (Heb 13:20) made, not between God and man but between the Father and the Son, which began with the sacrifice of Christ in His blood (Matt 26:28; Mark 14: 24; Luke 22:20; 1 Cor 11:25; Heb 12:24; Rev 5:9).

At present, Israel has no covenant with God but will later (Millennium) and the believer never will need one, though he will be the eternal recipient of it.

When the Holy Spirit indwells the believer, He doesn't use anything He finds, but what He brings, which is not His life but the life of the Lord Jesus (John 16:13; Col 3:4)

Let us now look at the other side. And what a refreshing contrast it is to turn from the old to the new. But what, it may be asked, is the new spring? Very good post brother. The Law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus is a concept not well understood or realised by most Christians. I say that not as a condemnation but as a fact. For myself it took about 20 years to understand it and it's still not fully grasped. I think this is because we start our Christian life in the natural man and so we can easily grasp and understand the concept of the law of letters, the moral law, or right versus wrong, this is what our whole society is based on... but to understand the law of the Spirit involves a change of mindset.

The best way to describe the law of the Spirit is as a tree. In the garden of Eden were two trees- tree of life and tree of knowledge of good and evil. Law of the Spirit of life is from the tree of life and its fruit is the fruit of the Spirit. On the other hand the law of letters, the written law and the moral law written on our conscience is from the tree of knowledge and the fruit is spiritual death (our soul separated from God).

The law of the Spirit does not condemn or accuse us. On the other hand the written law, and the moral law in our conscience condemns us and accuses us (and often over-condemns us).

The law of the Spirit is not the Spirit Himself but is something the Spirit has installed into our being. It is the inherent experiential knowledge of what we should do in any moment which is related to how much we have grown spiritually in Christ's life, and it is associated with the instant 'rhema' word that God speaks into us.

The best way to describe how the law of the Spirit works is by an example and I first contrast with the law of letters or law in our conscience:
Law of letters: Suppose I desire an apple in the fruit store but don't have enough money for it. I steal it but then because I read that stealing is wrong (in the 10 commandments), I know it is wrong and so I repent and pay for it. Now any religious person, atheist, buddhist, Jew or Muslim can live in this way - you don't have to be a Christian.

Moral law in conscience: I desire an apple but after I steal it I feel in my conscience that it is the wrong thing to do, I know it is wrong so I repent and pay for it. Again, any person , atheist, Buddhist, Jew, Muslim can live in this way, God has given every person a conscience and ability to know right from wrong.

Law of the Spirit of life: I see the apple but have no desire to steal it because I have received the life of Christ. Now this is a law that only the believer in Christ can live by. Anyone who has not received the Spirit cannot live according to this law.

The law of the Spirit frees us from the very desires which lead us to break the written law or moral law that results in condemnation and death.

Christ's life within us overcomes all the deathly desires within us and it is based upon this life that the law of the Spirit operates.

The law of the Spirit is bringing us back to our condition before the fall of Adam and Eve - a condition in which we have no knowledge of sin and the only thing we know is God's life.

There is a natural law which says if we drink too much coffee, alcohol and coca cola, our bodies will be sick.
The law of the Spirit starts in our spirit, spreads to our mind and emotions and will and eventually spreads into our mortal bodies giving life to our mortal bodies. The Law of the Spirit is a spiritual law which says if we receive Christ's life within us and let it grow, our souls and bodies will be healthy.

Hello James.

Not sure that this line is what the scripture states?

Ask Spirit1st he definitely knows what the reconciliation is about.

Hi DHC, I have stated God's ultimate purpose in reconciliation to hopefully complement the previous posts. Spirit1st does not state the ultimate purpose of God. Why do we have to walk in love and not law? Just because the bible says so? (that is rather legalistic).
Love is a fruit of the Spirit, but is only one fruit.
God desires us to have not just one fruit but the whole tree, the tree of life:
Rev 2:7 "To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God."
The tree of life in the paradise of God ("Eden") is part of God's ultimate purpose for his reconciliation.

I suggest that the focus on love is a symptom of evangelical theology which is centered around John 3:16 rather than the Garden of Eden (the dwelling place of God with man), the creation of man (as God's image on earth) and the tree of life (Christ).

Pretty agreeable Brother!

Adam and Eve Never had what we do in Christ Jesus !

They could sin , just as the angels can ! Jesus Christ could Not sin > Just as we cannot after salvation !
our flesh of course was not changed at salvation and can still sin ! It does not affect our new creature [Our spirit]
We still dwell a short time in the same old sin filled dying flesh body with it corrupt mind !

Many are looking and teaching the flesh can be perfected ! It not truth !

It never going to be perfected ! But if we live though our spirit enough ? We will not allow our flesh to have it way !

Rom 7:22 For I delight in the law of God after the inward man:
Rom 7:23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
Rom 7:24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
Rom 7:25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.

This is truth 100% !
Gen_3:19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

This scripture means ? Our flesh body is DEAD to God spiritually it has no relationship or eternal life with HIM !
But our New Creature He has made the few willing ! Has a eternal relationship with Him !

Rom_8:10 And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.

Our beginning in our LORD JESUS and the Kingdom of God is a Spiritual beginning! God is a Spirit and Father of Perfect spirit beings which we are at salvation !

Heb_12:9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?

Heb_12:23 To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,
Only our New Spirit being is made perfect and has eternal life and the Son relationship !

We have everything within that New Creature He makes us ! that we will ever need !
We have His very Power within us !

but it Only a baby at salvation and needs to grow and mature to be like Our LORD in knowledge and understanding !
It will Never accept a lie or do anything evil ! It Just like our Lord JESUS but a baby at our new Birth !

1Pe_2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

Heb_5:13 For every one that useth milk is unskilful in the word of righteousness: for he is a babe.

1Co_3:2 I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able.

It true ? Some do not grow much ! Many listen to others or books or teachers who do not know the spiritual trues or refuse to live them ?
Heb_5:12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

Many find it a hard thing to live by faith ? They want to live by sight ! They why many preach tithing and works ! No doubt some do not know the truth and others find it easier to live by sight !

Some are deceived by satan !
they do not understand ,people will give and do more out of LOVE than they ever would out of law !

God true children LOVE giving ! They look for ways to give ! Not to gain , but because God has put His perfect type Love within Them 1 every good thing of God comes from our Heart [Spirit] Those desires to love and worship him and do good works !

This is the one of the laws He writes in our Heart [Spirit] the other is faith !

Rom_5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

He does it all ! That why He gets all the glory !
