John answered them, saying, "I baptize with water, but there stands One among you whom you do not know. "It is He who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose." John 1:26-27 NKJV
Today’s key verses feature the words of a man who was part of God’s plan of bringing salvation to the world. They’re also the words of a man who knew his place within that plan. As a result, he was able to point people to Jesus as the Savior they desperately needed.
John’s humility and knowledge of his role makes him a great example Christian men should follow every day. John had accumulated a large following by this time, and some believed that he might be the long-awaited Messiah. But John knew his place in God’s grand plan of salvation, and he told his followers that he was only God’s messenger to point others toward Jesus.
That’s really God’s calling for each of us, isn’t it? He gives you specific gifts and talents, as well as a calling and sometimes a following, and He wants you to use everything He gives you to point other to Jesus.
Prayer: Father in heaven, I want to be a part of Your plans for bringing others into Your kingdom. As You direct, remind me to remain humble, knowing that the work isn’t about me. Instead, it’s all about Jesus.
