This passage is from Psalms.
Psa 136:15; But He overthrew Pharaoh and his army in the Red Sea, For His lovingkindness is everlasting.
Psa 136:16; To Him who led His people through the wilderness, For His lovingkindness is everlasting;
Psa 136:17; To Him who smote great kings, For His lovingkindness is everlasting,
Psa 136:18; And slew mighty kings, For His lovingkindness is everlasting:
Psa 136:19; Sihon, king of the Amorites, For His lovingkindness is everlasting,
Psa 136:20; And Og, king of Bashan, For His lovingkindness is everlasting,
I have read this numerous times through the years. But of course sometimes the Bible speaks to us differently at different times.
I am struck by the phrase.. two words used a number of times here... "His lovingkindness". Who is the "His" here. God of course.
But by 'HIS' lovingkindness... (God's lovingkindness) ... He killed people. What is so loving about killing people?
By His lovingkindness, God drowned Egyptians in the Red Sea.
By His lovingkindness, God made people wander through the desert for 40 years.
By His lovingkindness, God slew mighty kings.
By His lovingkindness, God killed Sihon. (King of he Amorites)
By His lovingkindness, God killed Og of Bashan (a king, one of the last of the giants).
I can't help but.. when I read this, think that God chose a side. It seems that God chooses sides all through the Bible. Usually in the old testament, He chose the side of the Jews/Israel.
Now there were times He let them be conquered and enslaved. (by His lovingkindness?) But perhaps it was loving of Him to let them be enslaved for various reasons.
Often it caused them to have a change of heart and seek God. Maybe that in itself is loving.
Why did God drown the Egyptians in the Red sea? To save the Jews (His children).. but aren't we all His children? I would say no. Only those who accept and obey Him are His children.
Why did God kill Sihon and Og? Again to save the Jews (His people). Now while this may seem rather obvious... God loves His people... what may be less obvious, is that He loves them enough to kill people who threaten them.
This brings up a lot of other questions... like well then, why didn't God kill Hitler before he murdered millions of Jews? I honestly don't know. But again, it could be... that the majority of Jews at that times weren't following God,
and certainly not Jesus. (I admit that is pure speculation on my part). But the part that is not speculation is... God kills some people out of love.. (for others, particularly His people).
