Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may obtain [it]. 1 Corinthians 9:24 NKJV

Eric Liddell, the son of Scottish missionaries to China, discovered a love of running while enrolled in boarding school in south London. In time, Liddell was called “The Flying Scotsman” and was the fastest man in Scotland.

Then, at the 1924 Olympics Liddell refused to run in his favored event, the 100-meter race, because one of the heats was held on Sunday. Instead, Liddell chose to compete in the 400-meter race, which was held during the week. His performance in the race set a European record that stood for twelve years.

After the Olympics, Liddell became a missionary to China. When asked whether he missed his glory days of racing, he responded “It’s natural for a chap to think over all that sometimes, but I’m glad I’m at the work I’m engaged in now. A fellow’s life counts for far more at this than the other.”

Erick Liddell knew what it meant to run for the greater prize. He died as a missionary in a Japanese internment camp in China during World War II, just months before the camp was liberated. But his legacy of commitment to God lives on and on.

Prayer: Lord, strengthen my legs to run the race before me. Be my prize worth running for. May others see me running and run alongside me toward You.
