Only human beings are unique in all the Creation: Mankind is made in God's image.

Gen 1:27
So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

It is for this reason that God loves human beings in particular, and for this reason that we are commanded to love our neighbor.

We should remember that every human being is an image of God. And for this reason there is no excuse not to love anyone, even our enemies.

The reason Jesus could love and even die for His enemies, is because each Person was a picture of His Heavenly Father.

I believe that the commandments were given the way they were so we could see the futility of depending on our power alone to keep them,. They are indeed God's will for us, but without the Spirit's power our efforts, no matter how hard we try, are futile.

2 Corinthians 1
8 For we do not want you to be unaware, brethren, of our affliction which came to us in Asia,
that we were burdened excessively, beyond our strength, so that we despaired even of life;
9 indeed, we had the sentence of death within ourselves so that we would not trust in ourselves,
but in God who raises the dead;

10 who delivered us from so great a peril of death, and will deliver us, He on whom we have set our hope.

The reason God loves us is because of who He is (God is love), and also because of who He has created us to be (in His own image).

God does not love the trees, rocks, fish, angels etc in the same way that He loves Human beings.
