Junk Yard - June 26, 2006
As I drove on the country back roads from Dawsonville to Atlanta yesterday, I saw two junk yards on the way. They were separated by many miles, and they were the graveyards for two different types of discards. One held old water heaters and appliances, while old cars occupied the other yard. The size and the appearance of the two types of junk were different, but they had a lot in common. All the items were old and of no use. They were broken, rusty, malformed, ugly, and were just plain throw-aways, piled upon each other. They were taking up space and spoiling the beauty of the countryside.
Perhaps these junk yards were just holding places for these metal items until they could be transferred to a recycling plant where they could be transformed into useable commodities.
People are pretty junky, too, before Jesus has the opportunity to recycle them into His likeness. The reason for this is that we are all born with the original sin handed down to us from Adam and Eve.
All humans have different physical appearances, just as the items in the junkyard did. We take up space and are of no Eternal use when we allow sin to rust our hearts, mangle our thoughts and crush our spirits. We spoil the beauty of God's beautiful earth with physical pollution and contamination, not to mention the way we ruin our own hearts with greed, lust, and self centeredness.
We do not have to worry about being thrown on the junk pile of life when we turn our existence over to God. The moment we realize that all we are and all we have are beautiful gifts from Him, we rise high above the junk yard of life and soar with Him into the abundantly beautiful life He promised in John 10:10.
