There are "two groups" of dead people here.
Rev 20:12; And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds.
Rev 20:13; And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds.
I notice several things about this passage...
first - it doesn't say .. they were judged... "according to their belief"... not does it say
they will be judged ... "according to their faith".. No.. the only thing it says they will be judged by here
is ... "their deeds".
Verse 12... simply says these people are dead.
Verse 13... says these are the dead that were in the sea, and those who were in Hades (hell).
Apparently some will go to hell, before they are even judged. But of course hell isn't the final destination
for anyone.
Eventually hell itself gets thrown into the Lake of Fire.
Rev 20:14; Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire.
Which would seem to be a worse destination than hell.
Matt 16:26; "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul?
Matt 16:27; "For the Son of Man is going to come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and WILL THEN REPAY EVERY MAN ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS.
The Son of Man.. ( Jesus ) will repay "Every man" (not just some men) according to their deeds.
It doesn't separate these men by what they believe.... it says "every man"... how we he judge them?
It says.. "according to their deeds".
John 3:19; "This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil.
John 3:20; "For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed.
It doesn't say here people fear that their faith or beliefs will be exposed. Why not? In generally people are proud of what they believe, but even though they believe something, they don't always act on it.
It say they fear that "their deeds" will be exposed.
John 3:21; "But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God."
Works may not be what saves us... None of us will be able to say we did enough works or good works
to be saved without Jesus. Faith in Jesus is required. But it doesn't say that's what everyone will be judged on.
John 5:28; "Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice,
John 5:29; and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment.
Again there are two groups of people here... those who go to a resurrection of life... and those who go
to a resurrection of judgment. What determines which group you are in?
.. Those who did "good deeds" are in one group... and those who did "evil deeds" are in the other group.
Make no mistake... how you live will affect where you spend eternity.
Rom 2:5; But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,
Rom 2:6; who WILL RENDER TO EACH PERSON ACCORDING TO HIS DEEDS:
Rom 2:7; to those who by perseverance in doing good seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life;
Rom 2:8; but to those who are selfishly ambitious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, wrath and indignation.
God will render ( give ) to each person.. (everyone ) .. according to.. "his deeds".
Those who did good deeds... immortaility, eternal life.
Those who were selfish and unrighteous... wrath and indignation.
Rom 8:13; for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
Heb 10:24; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds,
2 Cor 5:10; For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.
