To believe on him was to believe on his name. What was required for eternal life was to believe Jesus was Christ, the Son of God. ************ [John 20:31 KJV] "But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name."
John 3:16 is the paramount verse used for salvation, and you can use it if you like. I don't think it's the best verse for salvation.
i can find elements for our gospel in this passage. God loved us, and sent Christ for our salvation. We believe on him for eternal life. We believe Jesus is Christ, the Son of God, but just believing that doesn't save us. We have to believe Christ died for our sins and rose for our justification. We have to have faith in his blood.
