Job Opening for Meek and Humble Servants

The other day I attended the wedding of a friend's daughter. It was a beautiful, outdoor setting with flowers and grass and even a pond. I really don't know his daughter that well, and had never even met her husband-to-be. So, in all humility and meekness, I sat with my wife in the back seats. Much to my surprise, the father of the bride approached us and directed us up to the third row, right behind the family! What a mixed feeling of both honor and slight embarrassment... So it is with Jesus' parable of the Best Seat.

In Luke 14 He states, "For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." He makes the comment in the context of His story about sitting in the back and getting moved up. Much better than sitting in the front and being asked to move back! Who wants to endure that kind of shame? Now, the moral of the story seems to be simple. Jesus is looking for meek and humble servants, not religious hypocrites who are just too full of themselves.

The problem is I often act more like the latter than the former. Oh, I know, we all claim to be 'humble servants of Christ', but in reality I'm more like the Sons of Zebedee. They were so power hungry that they made their MOM sneak up to Jesus and request that they get special seats at his right and left hand. Can you imagine that? How presumptuous of them. But, then again, how many times do I find myself seeking my own glory? God help us all be like Jesus who, "Came not to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many." God be with you all...
