There are actually three baptisms that a christian undergoes but the first one by water teaches us what the second one, by spirit, does. The last one, by fire, is what gets us going.
Some people would say the three are defined differently... but then there is a fourth one.
Acts 19:1; It happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the upper country and came to Ephesus, and found some disciples.
Acts 19:2; He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" And they said to him, "No, we have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit."
Acts 19:3; And he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" And they said, "Into John's baptism."
Acts 19:4; Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus."
Acts 19:5; When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Acts 19:6; And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying.
Acts 19:7; There were in all about twelve men.
verse 3 mentions "John's baptism". John the baptist of course baptized in water. (for repentance)
verse 5 mentions being baptized in the name of Jesus... (which isn't water baptism, they already got that from John)
verse 6 mentions receiving the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
The baptism in Jesus's name is usually taken as baptism in water... yet the Bible distinctly separates them in some places.
Being baptized in Jesus's name is mentioned in Acts 2:38; Acts 8:16; Acts 10:48; Acts 19:5;
It "usually" happens in that order... but not always. For example Cornelius was baptized in water .... after ... receiving the Holy Spirit. Acts 10:44-48;
You mention being baptized in fire.... that means different things to people at different times.
John the baptist says Jesus will baptize with the Holy Spirit... and... fire. Matt 3:11; Luke 3:16; are they the same thing?
In Acts 2, the people who were baptized with the Holy Spirit had "tongues of fire" resting above their heads. ( Acts 2:3; )
Being baptized in water seems to be a sore subject for some people...
Mark 16:16; says you have to be baptized to be saved. But some people point to the thief on the cross.
I've heard a lot of different ideas about the thief on the cross.
It may simply be that grace covered him... he never had a chance to be baptized. But will grace cover everyone who has had plenty of opportunity to be baptized?
Some believe he died before Jesus died, so he wasn't under the new covenant yet.. so he didn't have a chance to be baptized. A verse that may support this
is when Jesus says "today you will be with me in paradise" Luke 23:43; in the old covenant people didn't go directly to heaven... they went to paradise or Abraham's bosom.
The thought here is when Jesus descended into the earth to "lead the captives free" ( Eph 4:8-9; ) he was taking the people in paradise or Abrahams bosom to heaven.
Being baptized in fire could mean ... simply the Holy Spirit.... but...
As many of you know... I used to be a fireman... we had a phrase about being "baptized in fire". It had very little to do with Jesus.
You weren't really considered a fireman, until you faced your first big fire.
It could mean 1 Peter 1:7; which talks about being "tested by fire". I don't think that means you have to be a fireman.
But we are all tested by fire. Just the trials of life. Mark 4:17; and Luke 8:13; talks about those fall away when the heat gets turned up.
... maybe... the fire just means... we will be tested in our faith. Peter was. Job was. I think we all are at some point. (probably several times)
