"Give the following instructions to the people of Israel."When you cross the Jordan into the land of Canaan, designate cities of refuge to which people can flee if they have killed someone accidentally. Numbers 35:10-11 NLT
Before the Israelites entered the Promised Land, God instructed Moses to set aside six cities from among the forty-eight cities of the Levites as cities of refuge. The cities of refuge were established so that someone who killed another person accidentally could have a place to live in safety until the case could go to trial. The cities of refuge were Kedesh, Shechem, Hebron, Bezer, Ramoth, and Golan (Joshua 20:7-8).
These cities were a picture of the graciousness of a God who was deeply concerned for the lives of people who had unintentionally committed a crime against a fellow human being. But they were also representative of a believer finding refuge in God Himself.
Psalm 46:1 says, “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble,” and Hebrews 6:18 promises, “We might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us.”
Jesus is our Refuge, but we do not need to flee to Him or to any physical place when we need help, for He is present with us every minute of every day.
Prayer: Jesus, thank You for being my Refuge when my heart is hurting and I have nowhere else to turn.
