Jesus in Hell?
There is a huge controversy in Christianity whether or not Jesus went to Hell after his crucifixion on the cross. Where did Jesus go during the three days and nights after he gave up his spirit? Jesus said...
Mat 12:40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall THE SON OF MAN BE THREE DAYS AND THREE NIGHTS IN THE HEART OF THE EARTH.
Jesus came to the earth to accomplish many things, and one of them was to destroy the works of the devil.
Heb_2:14 Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; THAT THROUGH DEATH HE MIGHT DESTROY HIM THAT HAD THE POWER OF DEATH, THAT IS, THE DEVIL;
Many people believe that Jesus destroyed the works of the devil by his death on the cross. There have been a lot people who have died for what they believe, but just because someone is killed by their enemy, that does not destroy their enemy that killed them! Jesus death on the cross accomplished several things, but it not destroy his enemy, it simply “disarmed” them from the weapons they used against man.
Col 2:13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses,
Col 2:14 by CANCELING THE RECORD OF DEBT THAT STOOD AGAINST US WITH ITS LEGAL DEMANDS. This he set aside, NAILING IT TO THE CROSS.
Col 2:15 HE DISARMED THE RULERS AND AUTHORITIES and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
The number one weapon Satan used against mankind was the word of God contained in the law. The law is what the devil used to accuse man before God day, and night. It is why Satan was able to gain access before God to accuse man based on God's own laws! This is why Satan is called “THE ACCUSER OF THE BROTHERS” (Rev 12:10)
The law which is the “STRENGTH OF SIN”..
1Co 15:56 The sting of death is sin; and THE STRENGTH OF SIN IS THE LAW.
Without the law Satan has no case to bring before God. Every prosecuting accuser must have a bases (the law) for their accusations to be legal! Jesus did not destroy the law he simply fulfilled it on the cross, which is why he said, “it is finished”
Disarming a enemy is NOT destroying them. Jesus's death on the cross did not destroy his enemy it disarmed him from causing more harm. The Bible tells us that Jesus “THROUGH DEATH” might destroy him who had the power of death....(Heb 2:14) The Greek word, “THROUGH” means, “BY WAY OF ACCOMPLISHING SOMETHING”.
If you are going to destroy an enemy, then you need to go to where their headquarters is, to where he rules. Certainly, Jesus destroyed the works of the devil “locally” by healing all that were oppressed by the devil, but to do it “globally” he needed to go into realm in which he rules..
Eph 6:12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the RULERS OF THE DARKNESS of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
2Pe 2:4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into CHAINS OF DARKNESS, to be reserved unto judgment;
How many of the angels that followed Lucifer sinned? All of them!!! How many angels did God cast down into hell into everlasting chains of darkness? All of them!!! Who rules the realm of darkness? Satan and all of his fallen angels! Where would Jesus need to go to destroy their works? Death was the only means in which Jesus “THROUGH” death could destroy the devil!!
Act 2:25 For DAVID SPEAKETH CONCERNING HIM, I FORESAW THE LORD always before my face, for he is on my right hand, that I should not be moved:
Act 2:26 Therefore did my heart rejoice, and my tongue was glad; moreover also my flesh shall rest in hope:
Act 2:27 Because THOU WILT NOT LEAVE MY SOUL IN HELL, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.
Act 2:30 Therefore being a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne;
Act 2:31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that HIS SOUL WAS NOT LEFT IN HELL, neither his flesh did see corruption.
Act 2:23 Him, being delivered by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God, ye have taken, and by wicked hands have crucified and slain:
Act 2:24 Whom God hath raised up, HAVING LOOSED THE PAINS OF DEATH: BECAUSE IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE THAT HE SHOULD BE HOLDEN OF IT.
When a sinner dies, I am sure it is not painless, but after a sinner dies their pain in not over by any means. Hell is a place of torment as Jesus reveals when he spoke about the rich man, and Lazarus who being in the pains of death tormented.
Jesus death was not over after he gave up his spirit on the cross, he stayed within the “pangs of death” even after death!!! Death is a ongoing experience even after physical death has taken it's course! No one has ever died, gone to hell and returned back to life to talk about it except Jesus Christ!
Rev 1:18 I am he that liveth, and WAS DEAD; AND, BEHOLD, I AM ALIVE FOR EVERMORE, AMEN; AND HAVE THE KEYS OF HELL AND OF DEATH.
Where did Jesus get the keys of Hell, and death? Did Jesus rise from the dead, and then all of a sudden found them laying on the ground? Satan did not drop them and then run off, Jesus took them by force!!
God the Father raised up Jesus from the dead by losing the pains of death after three days, and nights, because it was not possible that they (death, the powers of darkness) could hold him down!!!
Act 2:24 Whom God hath raised up, HAVING LOOSED THE PAINS OF DEATH: BECAUSE IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE THAT HE SHOULD BE HELD BY IT.
No amount of powers of darkness could ever hold light captive unless that light lets them. As Jesus speaking about his life said...
John 10:18 NO MAN TAKETH IT FROM ME, BUT I LAY IT DOWN OF MYSELF. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.
Psa 18:4 The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid.
Psa 18:5 The SORROWS OF HELL COMPASSED ME ABOUT: THE SNARES OF DEATH PREVENTED ME.
Psa 18:6 In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.
Psa 18:7 THEN THE EARTH SHOOK AND TREMBLED; the foundations also of the hills moved and were shaken, because he was wroth.
Remember when Jesus rose from the dead there was a great earthquake?
Mat 28:2 And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.
Mat 28:3 His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:
Mat 28:4 And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.
Mat 28:5 And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.
Mat 28:6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
Psa 116:1 I love the LORD, because he hath heard my voice and my supplications.
Psa 116:2 Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, therefore will I call upon him as long as I live.
Psa 116:3 THE SORROWS OF DEATH COMPASSED ME, AND THE PAINS OF HELL GAT HOLD UPON ME: I FOUND TROUBLE AND SORROW.
Psa 116:4 Then called I upon the name of the LORD; O LORD, I beseech thee, deliver my soul.
Ever know anyone who was in hell, and then the Lord delivered them from there? Jesus called his Father Lord, and the Father called his son Lord. (Matt 22:44) Clearly, this is God the Father speaking to Jesus in his resurrection from the dead!!!
Heb 1:6 And AGAIN, when he bringeth in the firstbegotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him.
Heb 1:7 And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.
Heb 1:8 But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the sceptre of thy kingdom.
Heb 1:9 THOU HAST LOVED RIGHTEOUSNESS, AND HATED INIQUITY; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.
This is NOT what God said when Jesus came into the world the first time in his birth, it is what God the Father said to Jesus's in his resurrection from death!!!
There are so many things that happened from the cross to Jesus resurrection that it is to numerous to speak them here, but It is always a good idea to have a general understanding of what Jesus went through that allowed us to have eternal life.
