For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those [who live] according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded [is] death, but to be spiritually minded [is] life and peace. Because the carnal mind [is] enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. Romans 8:5-8 NKJV
The word flesh in the New Testament sometimes refers to our physical bodies, but it also has the connotation of the corrupt part of our nature. Thus, our physical existence is in some way connected to our spiritual poverty as a descendant of Adam.
As God’s born-again child, you have the Holy Spirit. The issue is that the flesh and the Spirit “are in conflict with each other” (Galatians 5:17). As long as you live, you will experience their animosity. Choosing to set your mind on the things of the flesh, even as a believer is a form of death. How can it not be?
All flesh is headed toward the grave. But the Holy Spirit within us is “life and peace.” Setting your mind on the Spirit is your calling and also part of enjoying a portion of your eternal inheritance now.
Prayer: Strengthen me, Lord, to set my mind and affections solely on the things of God!
