Isaiah was referring to Jesus when he said this, because he saw the future and spoke of the Messiah's glory. John 12:41 NLT
Did you know Isaiah speaks in greater detail about Jesus than any other Old Testament prophet? What’s more, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Philip, Peter, Paul, and Jesus Himself quote from Isaiah’s prophecies scores of times—far more than all the other prophets put together.
Before Isaiah began to proclaim God’s Word, he experienced two miracles. First, he experienced firsthand the awfulness of his guilt. Then, he experienced the astounding miracle of the Lord’s cleansing (Isaiah 6:1-6). This new prophet of the Lord knew what it meant to deserve destruction. Therefore, his heart was ready to accept the Lord’s forgiveness and remarkable commission to serve Him for the rest of his life.
In a later vision, Isaiah saw the Lord Jesus laboring to carry a bloodstained Roman cross up the hill to Calvary (Isaiah 52:13-53:12). What an awful picture! Isaiah was equally shocked to realize that he was the one who went astray, yet Jesus was crushed; he was the one who sinned, yet the Messiah was put to death.
Throughout history people have asked, “Who killed Jesus?” Fingers point at the Roman guards, at the Jewish leaders, at the fickle crowds. Isaiah knew the real answer: He died because of us.
